October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Which is a great time to highlight the work our Employment Providers do each day to support individuals with DD be successful at obtaining careers!

I want to give a huge shout out to someone who does exactly that! Edward, who is a DSP with Licking/Knox Goodwill Industries, Inc. was recently able to join Lighthouse Cove for a trip to Washington D.C. for a chance to advocate for Direct Support Professionals.

Some of you might not know that DSPs do not have a Standard Occupational Classification code. A profession that does not have this code is at a disadvantage when it comes to accurate workforce data, recognition, certifications and retention. Edward was able to be a part of the fight to make sure these bills, H.R. 6137 and S. 3211 Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act will be passed! 

He said the group was able to speak with legislative aides and staff and share what they do everyday in their different roles! Edward expressed how thankful he was to be able to do this and enjoyed celebrating his Birthday fighting for what he loves to do!

Thank you Edward for your passion and dedication to this field. Also, thank you to Lighthouse Cove for leading the force of advocating for DSPs!!

Thank you C-TEC of Licking County for letting me join for your Open House-Career Fair last week! I was able to meet some awesome students and people from the community to let them know what it takes to be a DSP!

Thank you Newark City Schools-NHS for letting me join yesterday at their Skilled Trades Fair! It is always so inspiring to interact with students and hear about all the different directions they are wanting to explore for their future. Found a couple future DSPs as well!

After several months collecting feedback and working with Kane Learning, LCBDD has completed a draft of our next three-year strategic plan. We want to hear from people we support, their families, providers and community partners about what we got right, what’s missing and what your priorities are as we look to 2027 and beyond.
Join us at our October Board meeting, at 5 p.m. on October 21, at our administrative building (116 N. 22nd St. in Newark) and share your feedback on our draft. Plan to pop by for a few minutes or stay for the whole meeting — we just want to hear from our community!
