A proposed federal bill could transform the future of endometriosis care. The Endometriosis CARE Act, introduced in 2022, aims to allocate $50 million annually to advance research and expand treatment access for this often-misunderstood condition affecting over 1 in 10 reproductive-age women.

Jessica Opoku-Anane, associate professor and section chief of benign gynecological surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, emphasizes the urgency.

A recent Rutgers Health study reveals that defensive firearm use is exceedingly rare compared to other forms of gun violence exposure. Analyzing data from over 8,000 adults, researchers found that less than 1% of individuals with firearm access reported using a gun in self-defense within the past year. In contrast, a significant portion experienced indirect exposure to gun violence, such as hearing gunshots in their neighborhoods or knowing someone affected by firearm-related incidents.

These findings challenge common perceptions about the frequency of defensive gun use and underscore the importance of considering the broader impacts of gun violence when shaping policies.
