We are so grateful to take a break from work and enjoy a Candle Making Party! It was a fantastic night filled with hands-on candle crafting, a fun lesson on measurements and decimal precision (like understanding the difference between .7 and .07), delicious dinner, and plenty of good times and laughter. It is a pleasure to recommend Charlotte and Richard Nixon from Roan Mountain Soap and Candles for their exceptional quality and reliability!

No job history yet? That’s not the same as having nothing to put on a resume.

Classes, volunteer work, community involvement, projects, and everyday responsibilities all show skills that matter at work. Start with your contact information and a short summary, then build from there with clear sections that are easy to scan.

Not no experience. A different kind of experience. That’s the point.

Independence can look like a new job skill. Or a choice made at home.

It does not mean doing everything alone. It means having the opportunity to build skills, make decisions, and do more for yourself with the right support along the way.

At Avery Association for Exceptional Citizens, we have been serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Avery County since 1976 through Pathways to Independence, our day program and vocational training, supported living, and the Avery County Group Home.

Not one path. Many.

Laundry day starts with the label.

Those small symbols on a clothing tag can tell you a lot: machine wash, hand wash, low heat, normal heat, or do not tumble dry. Reading the care label helps protect clothes from shrinking, fading, and other damage. More than that, it makes a daily routine easier to understand and follow.

At Yellow Mountain Enterprises, practical skills like laundry care are part of real-life learning that supports confidence, independence, and participation in the community.

Inclusion is more than being invited.

It means having a real place in the life of a community. At Avery Association for Exceptional Citizens, and through Yellow Mountain Enterprises, we support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Avery County with opportunities to learn, work, live, and connect.

Not the sidelines. Real work, real choices, real participation. That’s the point.

"I made this" means something.

At Yellow Mountain Enterprises, that pride shows up in real work, new skills, and everyday accomplishments. Through our day program, vocational training, job coaching, and structured day programming, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Avery County are building confidence and contributing in meaningful ways.

Not just an activity. Work, learning, and something you can point to with pride. What is something you have made that you are proud of?

At Yellow Mountain’s Avery County Group Home, everyone has a part to play.

Meals, shared spaces, daily routines. Not just tasks. Chances to build skills, make choices, and contribute to a home that feels welcoming and respectful.

For Avery Association for Exceptional Citizens, this work is part of a larger commitment that has served adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Avery County since 1976. Six residents, 24/7 support, and a community built year after year, one everyday contribution at a time.

How often do you use math without even thinking about it?

Counting change, comparing prices, measuring ingredients, keeping a budget. These are everyday tasks, and they matter. At Yellow Mountain Enterprises, educational and life-skills activities connect math to real-life routines so participants can practice skills that support confidence and greater independence at home, at work, and in the community.

What everyday task do you use math for most often?
