Every Step Led Here πŸ”οΈ

After months of training and preparation, Riverside Health urologist Dr. Scott Burgess has reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

While the view from the top is remarkable, this journey was never just about reaching the summit. Inspired by the courage, resilience and determination he witnesses in patients every day, Dr. Burgess took on this challenge as a reflection of the strength required to navigate life's toughest journeys.

"Standing at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, I'm reminded that the journey is often more important than the destination. Every day, I have the privilege of caring for patients who face challenges far greater than this climb, and their strength inspired me every step of the way. This experience reinforced something I see in cancer care every day: progress happens one step at a time, and every step matters."

Congratulations, Dr. Burgess, on an incredible accomplishment and for celebrating the resilience of the patients who inspired the climb.

Every person deserves access to timely breast health care, regardless of financial circumstances.

We're proud to partner with the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF) through the Screening & Diagnostic Services Fund to help eligible individuals access no-cost breast cancer screening and diagnostic services. Since 2022, the Fund has helped more than 1,550 patients receive over 3,100 screening and diagnostic tests, helping identify 39 breast cancer diagnoses.

As Dr. Aaron H. Chevinsky shares, early detection is one of the most important factors in improving breast cancer outcomes. Through this partnership, we're helping remove financial barriers so more people can receive the care they need, when they need it.

If cost has kept you from getting screened or pursuing follow-up testing, help may be available. Contact Riverside's Cancer Outreach Office at 1-800-520-7006 to learn more about eligibility.

Thank you, VBCF, for your partnership in improving access to care across Eastern Virginia. πŸ’—

Access to breast cancer breast cancer diagnostic services shouldn't depend on someone's ability to pay.

We're excited to partner with Riverside Health to expand VBCF's Screening & Diagnostic Services Fund into eastern and coastal Virginia, helping more people access the testing they need.

Through this partnership, eligible patients may receive financial assistance for mammograms and other breast imaging services at participating Riverside Health locations.

This expansion is another step toward reducing financial barriers to breast health services across Virginia.

🀧 Cough, chest congestion, or shortness of breath? It might be more than just a cold.

A cold usually starts with a runny nose, sore throat, sneezing, and a mild cough. Bronchitis, on the other hand, often feels deeper in the chestβ€”think persistent cough, mucus, chest congestion, wheezing, or shortness of breath. If your cough is getting worse, you’re having trouble breathing, or you have chest discomfort or a fever, it’s time to get checked. M.D. Express Urgent Care is here for you, seven days a week.

For nearly 56 years, Jim Thornton and Donna Thornton built a life together.

When Donna became ill, she had one wish: to remain at home. Thanks to Riverside Hospice, that wish became a reality. Surrounded by the people she loved most, Donna spent her final days where she felt most comfortable, and Jim experienced firsthand the compassion, dignity and support that hospice care can bring to a family.

But Jim also knew that not every family has the ability to receive hospice care at home.

That's why he's helping make something extraordinary possible.

Through a transformational gift to the Riverside Health Foundation the future Donna S. Thornton Hospice Home on the campus of Warwick Forest will provide a peaceful, home-like setting for patients whose care needs can no longer be met at home, ensuring more families have access to the comfort, dignity and compassionate support that meant so much to Jim and Donna.

These photos tell the story of a remarkable love, a promise fulfilled and a legacy that will continue caring for others for generations to come. πŸ’š

πŸ’‰ Leading by example.

Today, we welcomed leaders from the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, including Virginia State Health Commissioner Dr. Cameron Webb, for a community event highlighting the importance of the annual flu vaccination.

Those in attendance didn't just talk about prevention, they rolled up their sleeves and received their flu shots, reinforcing a simple but important message: getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to help protect yourself, your loved ones and your community during flu season.

πŸ“Έ Check out photos from today's event and learn more about why healthcare leaders are encouraging Virginians to make the flu vaccine part of their fall routine.

That medicine cabinet cleanout you've been putting off? Consider this your sign.

Expired prescriptions, half-used medications and bottles you've forgotten about shouldn't sit around indefinitely. On National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, safely and anonymously dispose of unwanted prescription medications at a collection site near you.

Proper disposal helps prevent medication misuse, accidental poisoning and environmental contamination, all while giving you one less thing to keep in the medicine cabinet.

πŸ’š Today, we celebrate a nursing legacy decades in the making.

Please join us in celebrating Donna, recipient of Riverside's first-ever DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing a career dedicated to compassionate care, mentorship, and nursing excellence.

This special honor recognizes nurses whose lifelong commitment has left a lasting impact on patients, colleagues, and the nursing profession. For nearly 40 years, Donna has devoted her life to nursing, including almost 25 years at Riverside. From caring for patients as an Open Heart and MICU nurse to educating future nurses and serving as a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist, her influence has reached far beyond any single role.

Today, Donna serves as an RN Clinical Specialist at Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she continues to share her expertise, support fellow caregivers, and advance excellence in patient care.

When asked what she loves most about nursing, Donna shared:

"I truly believe the Riverside mission. I loved nursing because I got the chance to make a difference in people's lives when they were at their worst."

Her legacy lives on in the countless patients she cared for, the nurses she mentored, and the generations of caregivers she helped inspire.

Congratulations, Donna, on this historic and well-deserved honor. Thank you for a remarkable career defined by compassion, leadership, and excellence. πŸ’šπŸŒΌ

πŸŽ€ This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Amy Lovejoy is sharing a message about one of the most important parts of survivorship: showing up for your follow-up care.

After treatment ends, it can be tempting to put off follow-up appointments and screenings. Amy understands that feeling. But she also knows how important it is to stay on top of survivorship care, including regular appointments, follow-up exams and routine mammograms.

In this heartfelt message, Amy encourages others to make their health a priority, keep recommended screenings on the calendar, and not let fear make the decision for them.

πŸ’— For breast cancer survivors, keeping up with follow up care is an important part of taking care of yourself.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, take the next step for your health. If you're due for a screening or follow-up mammogram, schedule yours today: https://ow.ly/2BeG50ZU40a
