Are you doing your side-lying leg raises correctly? 👀

This is one of the most common exercises used in physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the hip. But here's the catch: your setup can make a big difference in which muscles are doing most of the work.

If we're trying to target the gluteus medius and other muscles along the side of the hip, we want to pay attention to more than simply lifting the leg.

Here's what to focus on:

✅ Keep your pelvis stable and stacked.
✅ Position your top leg slightly behind your body.
✅ Gently turn your toes toward the floor.
✅ Lift and lower your leg slowly and with control.
✅ Avoid rocking your pelvis or using your lower back to create the movement.

You should feel the muscles working around the upper, outer portion of your hip.

Why does this matter? Because completing an exercise isn't the same as performing it effectively for your specific goal.

At Endurance Unleashed, we look beyond whether you're completing your exercises. We want to make sure your program is appropriate for you, that you're progressing, and that you're building the strength you need for your sport and daily life.

Have you tried this variation before? Did changing your position make a difference in where you felt the exercise?

Have you ever spent money on healthcare, attended appointment after appointment, and wondered… “Am I actually getting any better?” 🤔

You're not alone.

Whether you're using insurance or paying out of pocket, your time, money, and health matter.

And if you're an endurance athlete dealing with persistent pain, you deserve more than a quick treatment, a few generic exercises, and a “see you next week.”

You deserve to understand:

🏃 What's potentially contributing to your pain?
🔍 What needs to be assessed beyond the painful area?
💪 Why are you doing these particular exercises?
📈 How will we measure whether you're progressing?
🎯 What's the plan to get you back to the activities you love?

Here's the important part: a higher price doesn't automatically mean better care, and insurance-based care isn't automatically inferior.

What matters is the quality of the evaluation, the thought behind your treatment, communication, and whether your plan is helping you move toward your goals.

At Endurance Unleashed, we believe athletes deserve individualized care that considers their sport, their lifestyle, and what they want to accomplish.

You shouldn't be afraid to ask questions about the care you're receiving.

Have you ever felt like you weren't getting the value or answers you needed from a healthcare provider? What do you wish had been different?

Would you run a mile while solving FOUR Rubik’s Cubes? 🤯🏃♂️

George Scholey reportedly did just that, combining a mile run with the challenge of solving four Rubik’s Cubes.

It's definitely an unusual athletic challenge, but it brings up an interesting question: how much of endurance performance is physical, and how much depends on your brain?

Think about what you're managing during a hard run:
🏃 Maintaining your pace and rhythm.
🧠 Staying focused when fatigue sets in.
⚡ Coordinating your movements efficiently.
📊 Adjusting your effort as conditions change.

Sometimes, adding a cognitive challenge to a movement drill can make it harder to coordinate at first. With practice, the movement may become more familiar, freeing up attention for other aspects of performance.

That's one reason we sometimes incorporate coordination and rhythm drills into athletic training.

But here's the important part: there's no magic running cadence that works for everyone. Your ideal rhythm depends on your pace, your individual mechanics, and your goals.

Now I'm curious!

What's your average running cadence according to your watch? And do you find it harder to maintain your rhythm when you get tired?

If you could tell your coach or physical therapist ONE thing that would help them understand you better as an athlete, what would it be? ❤️

Maybe you have a demanding job and can't recover like a professional athlete.

Maybe you want to race competitively without having your entire life revolve around training.

Maybe you're scared that an injury could take away something you love.

Or maybe you just want someone to explain WHY you're doing something instead of handing you a list of exercises and expecting you to follow along.

These are the conversations that matter.

As a Doctor of Physical Therapy who works with endurance athletes, I know that understanding an athlete means looking beyond their injury, pace, mileage, or race goals.

It means understanding their life, their priorities, their concerns, and what they want to get back to doing.

Because the best plan isn't simply the one that looks good on paper. It's the one that makes sense for YOU.

So let's hear it. Finish this sentence in the comments:

💬 “I wish my coach or PT understood that __________.”

I'll be reading your responses. Let's start a conversation that every athlete deserves to have.

🏃♂️ Do your neck and shoulders get tight every time you run, cycle, or swim?

Before assuming it's just poor posture or tight muscles, take a moment to check HOW you're breathing.

When exercise gets harder, your breathing naturally becomes more active. But if you're relying heavily on your upper chest, neck, and shoulder muscles, that may contribute to the tension you're feeling.

Here's a simple breathing drill to try:

1️⃣ Lie on your back with your knees bent.
2️⃣ Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen.
3️⃣ Breathe in gently through your nose and notice your abdomen expand.
4️⃣ Exhale slowly and let your abdomen fall.
5️⃣ Aim for relaxed breathing without unnecessary tension in your neck and shoulders.

Try practicing for about 5 minutes a day, especially when you're feeling stressed.

The goal isn't to force your chest to remain completely still or to breathe into your belly as much as possible. It's to develop comfortable, controlled breathing without excessive tension.

And remember, neck and shoulder tightness can have several causes, including training load, technique, and muscular endurance. Breathing is just one piece of the puzzle!

Do your neck and shoulders get tight during your workouts? Let me know which sport brings it on most: running, cycling, or swimming. 👇

Your watch says you're ready for a hard workout. Your body says, “I barely slept, and I feel like doo-doo.” 😂⌚

So… who should you listen to?

Today's smartwatches can track everything from sleep and heart rate to recovery scores and training readiness. That information can be incredibly useful, but here's the catch: your watch doesn't know your entire story.

It doesn't fully understand the stress you've had at work, the restless night you just experienced, how mentally exhausted you feel, or how your legs are responding to a tough week of training.

That's why I encourage endurance athletes to look at BOTH the data and how they actually feel.

🏃 How did you sleep?
💪 How have your recent workouts felt?
🧠 Are you dealing with extra stress?
📉 Is your performance trending down?
😴 Have you given yourself enough time to recover?

And remember, feeling great doesn't always mean you're fully recovered, either. Your recent training load and overall recovery habits matter just as much.

As a Doctor of Physical Therapy who works with endurance athletes, I want you to use technology as a tool...not let it make every training decision for you.

Now I'm curious…

Does your watch help guide your training, or does it sometimes make you want to throw it across the room? 😂

🏃♂️ Want to run faster? It’s not just about how hard you push off the ground. It’s about how well you absorb force, transition, and explode into your next movement.

There’s been a lot of debate about plyometrics lately. Should you focus on landing softly, or should you drive forcefully into the ground?

The answer? Both have a place. The key is knowing when and how to train each.

The single-leg step jump is one way to progress these skills:

✅ Start with controlled, quiet landings.
✅ Learn to absorb and manage force on one leg.
✅ Progress toward explosive rebounds and quicker transitions.
✅ Develop the reactive strength needed for athletic movements.

Why does this matter for runners? Your ability to produce force quickly can contribute to running performance, but you need the right foundation before adding more intensity.

At Endurance Unleashed, we believe training should bridge the gap between recovering from an injury and getting back to performing at your best.

Save this exercise for later, share it with a runner who wants to get faster, and drop your questions in the comments!

🏃 You crushed your race or workout… so why are you STILL recovering days later?

Maybe you hit a personal best. Maybe you just finished a tough long run. Or maybe your legs feel like they need three business days just to get down the stairs. 😂

Before you assume you're injured, take a look at these 3 recovery essentials:

😴 Sleep: Are you getting enough quality sleep and keeping a consistent schedule?

🥗 Nutrition: Are you eating enough to support your training, including carbohydrates to replenish energy and protein to support muscle repair?

📅 Training load: Are you giving your body enough time between hard sessions to recover and adapt?

Foam rollers, massage guns, and compression boots may have their place, but they can't make up for consistently inadequate sleep, insufficient nutrition, or a training schedule that demands more than your body can currently handle.

And if you're recovering more slowly than usual despite taking care of these basics, it may be time to reassess your training load.

Remember: recovery is part of training, not time wasted away from it!

👇 I want to hear from you!

🚴♂️ Imagine racing 157 kilometers… and having the whole thing decided by ONE perfectly timed move.

That’s exactly what American cyclist Brandon McNulty did at the Veneto Classic, attacking on a gravel climb with about 10 km to go and riding solo to victory.

But there’s a lesson here for every endurance athlete, not just professional cyclists.

🏃 The runner who surges every time someone passes.
🚴 The cyclist who burns matches chasing every attack.
🏊 The triathlete who goes out too hard because everyone else looks faster.

Sometimes, the biggest mistake isn't a lack of fitness. It's letting competition and ego dictate your effort.

Smart racing means knowing your strengths, understanding the course, practicing changes in pace, and saving enough for the moments that matter.

You can't control how fit the person next to you is. But you can control your preparation, your decisions, and how you execute your race plan.

👇 Tell me in the comments: Have you ever chased someone early in a race and paid for it later? Or have you successfully held back and finished stronger?

🚨 What's the WORST running or endurance training advice you've ever received?

We've all heard some questionable advice over the years. 😂

Was it…

🏃♂️ “No pain, no gain!”
📈 “You need to run more miles to get faster!”
🚫 “You should NEVER walk during a race!”
🧘 “You have to stretch every day to avoid injuries!”

Some of these sound convincing until you look a little closer. And following the wrong advice can leave athletes frustrated, struggling to progress, or unsure what their bodies actually need.

As a Doctor of Physical Therapy who works with runners and endurance athletes, I want to help separate useful training principles from myths that deserve a second look.

👇 Now it's your turn!

What's the WORST piece of endurance training advice you've ever received?

Share it in the comments. Your story might help another athlete avoid making the same mistake and it might even inspire one of our next myth-busting videos!
