She’s only 5… so why does she have expanders? 🦷
😴Snoring. Mouth breathing. Teeth grinding. And these symptoms continued even AFTER her adenoids were removed
🚩 Red flags every parent should know:
😴 Regular snoring or restless sleep
👄 Mouth breathing, especially during sleep
🦷 Teeth grinding
💤 Bedwetting, daytime fatigue, or difficulty concentrating
🛑 Pauses in breathing or gasping during sleep
Here’s why a comprehensive evaluation matters!
🪥As a pediatric dentist, I look beyond teeth—evaluating jaw growth, palate width, bite development, and tongue space.
💨But breathing concerns require a TEAM approach! We collaborate with ENT specialists, pediatricians, allergists, and myofunctional therapists.
So why expand as early as age 5?
When clinically indicated, early expansion can:
✅ Correct a narrow upper jaw or crossbite
✅ Create more room for developing permanent teeth
✅ Help address certain crowding concerns
✅ Support healthier bite development
✅ Increase nasal dimensions in some children
While expansion may improve nasal airflow in certain cases, it’s not a guaranteed treatment for snoring or sleep apnea.
💛 Early evaluation doesn’t mean every child needs early treatment. It means recognizing when intervention could make a difference.
