When X-rays Helped Solve a Turtle Mystery

Sometimes veterinary imaging takes you somewhere unexpected.

Back in 2021, the veterinary team at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium faced a unique challenge: a rare mata mata turtle was having trouble laying her eggs, and they needed a way to monitor her without adding unnecessary stress.

The solution? Portable digital radiography.

Using a MinXray Enduras Wireless system, the team captured on-site radiographs and discovered the turtle was carrying 11 eggs. Follow-up imaging helped the team determine when the eggs had successfully passed.

Today, that little turtle is thriving—and this story remains a great reminder of why portable imaging can make such a difference in veterinary care.

Our own Jeanne Walter, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at MinXray, is representing MinXray at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2026 in Antalya, Türkiye, participating in the important discussion, “Advancing Diagnostic Imaging in Space: From Ultrasound to Radiography and Beyond.”

The panel discussion brings together experts in space medicine and medical imaging to explore how diagnostic imaging can evolve to meet the demands of future space missions — from ultrasound to portable digital radiography and beyond.

Meet the radiographer who took chest X-rays of miners at the deepest point on earth. Did you know that due to the nature of the job, miners are particularly susceptible to , a curable airborne infectious disease that mainly impacts the lungs, and to silicosis, a serious, irreversible occupational lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica dust over time. Chest X-ray imaging is one of the most effective and impactful tools for lung health screening.

In this video, you can see the excitement of the miners X-rayed and hear them explain how it was fast and convenient to have their X-ray taken. Since participating in this event, they have spread the word to their peers about the importance of lung health screening for miners.
