As the weather gets colder, nutrition needs don’t take a break.
The transition into fall and winter is a great time to take a fresh look at nutrition and hydration
A few simple ways to support nutrition during the colder months:
🥣 Lean into warm, nourishing foods
Soups, stews, oatmeal, chili, and other nutrient-dense comfort foods can be both appealing and packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals.
💧 Keep hydration on the radar
People may feel less thirsty in cooler weather, but hydration is still essential. Offer water, warm beverages, soups, and other hydrating options throughout the day.
🥕 Take advantage of seasonal produce
Winter squash, sweet potatoes, apples, pears, leafy greens, and other seasonal foods can add variety, fiber, and important nutrients to meals.
🍗 Prioritize protein
Maintaining adequate protein intake is especially important to support muscle mass, strength, healing, and overall health.
☀️ Don’t overlook vitamin D
With less time outdoors during the colder months, vitamin D intake becomes an important consideration. Encourage foods rich in vitamin D and supplementation when clinically appropriate.
Nutrition is about more than meeting requirements, it’s about helping people feel nourished, comfortable, and cared for all year long.
