Israel Cancer Research Fund - Chicago Chapter ICRF provides pivotal grants to outstanding Israeli scientists to support groundbreaking cancer research across Israel.

Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) is a nationwide charitable organization that receives its total income from private donations. ICRF was founded in 1975 by a group of American and Canadian researchers, oncologists, and lay people determined to harness Israel's educational and scientific resources in the fight against cancer. Its initial purpose was to stem the "brain drain" of Israeli researchers by providing funds for postdoctoral fellowships for young Ph.D.'s. ICRF is the only U.S.-based charity solely devoted to supporting cancer research in Israel. Since its inception, ICRF has provided more than $72 million in funding to support innovative studies by Israeli scientists. Our awardees are selected through a rigorous peer-review process that is conducted by a world-class scientific panel. We support individuals at all of the major research institutions in Israel. ICRF-funded researchers have been making significant progress and have been able to develop improved chemotherapies, advanced techniques in bone marrow transplantation, and an enhanced understanding of tumor suppressor genes. By continuing to support cancer research in Israel for the benefit of all mankind, the ICRF:

makes it possible for scientists to utilize Israel's unique population of diverse ethnic groups which afford unequalled opportunities to study genetic and environmental data that contribute to cancer;

places a strong emphasis on young scientists pioneering in new directions with fresh approaches to areas of research that have challenged the experts;

respects and draws upon Israel's unparalleled convergence of some of the finest scientists and physicians in the free world - a resource that must not be lured to conduct research outside Israel.

For Dr. Katy Margulis, the drive to advance cancer research is deeply personal.

After losing her father to cancer, Dr. Margulis became determined to find better ways to understand and treat the disease.

With support from ICRF, Dr. Margulis and her team are studying skin cancer at the patient level, analyzing more than 40 patient samples in less than a year. Their work is helping advance personalized approaches to treatment while building a research platform with potential applications across different types of cancer.

Early-stage research can be where tomorrow’s breakthroughs begin. We’re proud to support scientists like Dr. Margulis as they work toward better treatments and better outcomes for patients.

About 1 in 50 people of Ashkenazi Jewish descent carries a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. That’s roughly eight times the rate in the general population.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re looking at why BRCA mutations are more common in Ashkenazi Jewish families, and how ICRF-funded scientists in Israel are working to turn genetic risk into earlier detection, better prevention, and more personal care.

New publication alert! ICRF-funded scientist Prof. Ido Amit and his team at the Weizmann Institute have just published new findings in Nature Genetics. By analyzing cancer cells from patients, they uncovered key patterns behind why some cancer cells resist therapy and identified a promising new target for CAR T-cell therapy in multiple myeloma.

This discovery brings us closer to more personalized, effective treatments and offers new hope for overcoming treatment resistance. We’re proud to support research that’s paving the way for better outcomes for patients everywhere.

For children and families facing neuroblastoma, new research can bring new possibilities and new hope.

ICRF and Shir for Life are partnering to fund new research into neuroblastoma, a rare and often difficult-to-treat childhood cancer.

The three-year, $180,000 grant will support Prof. Ravid Straussman of the Weizmann Institute of Science as he investigates how bacteria within neuroblastoma tumors may influence tumor development, immune activity, and response to treatment.

Through this partnership, ICRF and Shir for Life are supporting research that could lead to new treatment options and greater hope for children and families facing neuroblastoma.
