In addition to surgical cleft care, GSF provides comprehensive, family-centered care in the areas of education, nutrition, speech therapy, psychosocial consultations, and dentistry. GSF engages with the local medical community in each country to provide follow-up care and ensure long-term sustainability.

For speech therapist Dr. Salma Jabre, caring for a child with cleft begins with two essential things: feeding and speech.

In Beirut, she works with families at different stages of their child's development. For babies born with a cleft palate, that can mean teaching parents how to use a special bottle so their baby can feed safely and get the nutrition they need to grow. For older children, it means evaluating their speech and helping them develop sounds that may be difficult because of their cleft.

It's an important reminder that cleft care extends far beyond the operating room.

Because every child deserves to feed well, grow strong, and have their voice heard. 💙

Many people hope to one day give something to the community they grew up in. Dr. Charanya Vijayakumar has been doing it for 10 years.

She grew up in the Middle East. Today, as a volunteer surgeon with Global Smile Foundation, she serves families in Lebanon whose babies are born with cleft. And she has no plans to stop.

When Mohammad Jawad's mother learned at her five-month ultrasound that her baby would be born with a cleft, she had so many questions.

Would he be able to feed? What would his childhood look like? What would this mean for his future?

She carried those questions through the rest of her pregnancy, while war unfolded around her family.

This October in Beirut, Mohammad Jawad had surgery to repair his cleft lip.

His cleft is part of his story. It doesn't have to define the rest of it. 💙

For a parent, the journey to a child's cleft surgery doesn't start on the road. It starts the day their child is born.

Then come months of waiting, until their baby is old enough and strong enough for surgery. And for some families, a trip that can take days.

This October in Beirut, that journey reached the moment every parent waits for. Their child came out of surgery and back into their arms.

For some of the families who came to Beirut this October, it was their child's first surgery. For others, it was the next step in treatment that will continue as they grow.

Behind every one of those surgeries are people who made it possible, many of them from across the world. Among them, a community in, Massachusetts, more than 5,000 miles away.
