Scar tissue can look finished for years and still respond to the right input.

Matrix stiffness can activate fibroblasts through mechanotransduction. Scar tissue can keep signaling for more collagen production even without a new injury. That ongoing activity is why established scar tissue stays responsive to changes in its environment.

There's supposed to be a signal to stop. In fibrosis, the message doesn't go through.

Fibroblasts convert into myofibroblasts in response to persistent injury signals. Myofibroblasts produce collagen to close the wound, then normally undergo apoptosis or revert back one repair is complete.

In fibrosis, the deactivated switch is not flipped. Myofibroblasts keep depositing collagen past the point of closure.
