Five Flavors Herbs Integrating Traditions for Wellness. We create effective and sustainable remedies using Traditional We are Green Business Certified. and Ingrid Bauer, MS.

Five Flavors Herbs creates over 200 physician-formulated single herb tinctures, oils, and glycerites, as well as an extensive line of internal and topical formulas. Our formulas are based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, scientific research, and traditional uses of native plants of North America. Five Flavors Herbs uses botanicals grown in our home garden as well as native herbs that we wildcraft ourselves. Other herbs are certified organically grown, including a number of domestically grown Chinese herbs. The imported Chinese herbs we use are purchased from suppliers who demonstrate organic certification or provide assurance that herbs are never sprayed, fumigated, or irradiated. We use certified organic grain alcohol, organic olive oil, and purified water in our preparations. We feel that ecological and physical health are intimately connected, and we strive to manufacture herbal products that respect the earth while supporting individuals. Our international customer base includes a loyal following of practitioners, medical doctors, naturopathic doctors, clinical herbalists, and retail stores. Our company has grown by serving the needs of their patients and customers. Located in Oakland, California, Five Flavors Herbs is a family-run business owned and operated by Benjamin Zappin, L.Ac.

As gardeners and wildcrafters, we have always loved harvesting, preserving and preparing our own food and medicine. We don't grow our own rice, so seeing it growing, drying, sold, and cooked in China fills our bowls!

Funny thing is, within a half hour drive of our facility in Grass Valley, thousands of acres of rice stretch across California's Central Valley, so the crop is not foreign to us! But seeing rice grown in its motherland is next level.

In East Asian culinary and medicinal traditions, rice in its many varieties and preparations plays such an important role that the words for "cooked rice" and "meal" are interchangeable 饭 (fàn).

In terms of TCM energetics and therapeutic principles, rice...
🥣 Nourishes Qi, Blood, and Yin
🍚 Enters the Spleen and Stomach
🍯 Is Neutral and Sweet

Rice, cooked with extra water into congee, is both a daily breakfast staple and also a medicinal food for many afflictions ranging from digestive upset to home sickness.

We'd love to hear what role rice has played in your diet, healing traditions, and emotional landscape 🌾

It’s one thing to study and practice TCM, and another thing to see the herbs you know and love growing, drying and being sold in China!
As an acupuncture student, Benjamin Zappin had the opportunity to study and travel in China. This time around, Ingrid Bauer, MD has been exploring the city parks, roadside gardens, urban markets and rural apothecaries to find many familiar botanicals.

When it comes to really special California native plants, Yerba Mansa (Anemopsis californica) rises to the top of the field. This member of the Saururaceae or Lizard Tail family would win by family name alone!

But what's so special about this bog-loving perennial that grows from Baja California up through the Central Valley is it's diversity of health supporting properties. While the leaves can be used topically for poultices or brewed in teas or soaks, the roots contain the most potent constituents.

We love Yerba Mansa for all things epithelial! It is categorized as an astringent and antimicrobial by herbalists, can help support a healthy...
🫁 Respiratory tract
🥣 Digestive tract
💧 Urinary tract

We strongly prefer cultivated Yerba Mansa due to the destruction of so much of this special plant's native habitat across California. It's incredibly easy to grow from small pieces of root crown, and does well in raised garden beds with ample irrigation, or in boggy natural areas that dry out in the summer. If you have the space, give it a try!

As part of our week of honoring Indigenous heritage, we are also celebrating our favorite California native plants!

California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is our state flower, and blooms from the southern deserts to the coastal ranges to the Sierra foothills... and in our garden! Since it's protected in the wild, we grow our own California poppy on our farm in Nevada County, Sunset Ranch.

California poppy is a perennial in it's natural habitat, but can also be grown as an annual herb in colder climates. Our friends Thomas and Holly of the East West School of Herbology and Herb Whisperer grow a wicked crop in the hills of Western Massachusetts. Instead of harvesting fall-sown plants in the spring, as we do out here on the West Coast, East Coast growers plant in the spring and harvest in the fall before frost.

However you grow it (just don't collect in the wild), the entire plant can be extracted for its gentle calming and comfortable properties. Safe enough for irritable kids, and strong enough for over-worked, over-stressed, achy grownups, California poppy is one of our favorite herbs for all ages. It lacks the opioids of its Papaveraceae cousins, while gently supporing a relaxed and calm nervous system.

We feature California Poppy it in our favorite formulas including Tranquility and Sweet Dreams.

Can you tell we're into this plant? Oh yeah, it's on our logo :)

It's Indigenous Peoples' Day ... this ought to be a day for celebration! A day to celebrate life, ancestors, culture, and nature!

But we also must pause to acknowledge the painful history of European colonialism in the Americas, and the contemporary reality that continues to marginalize Indigenous people and threaten their lives, livelihoods and homelands around the world.

As non-Indigenous herbalists who rely heavily on plants native to North America, it's critically important that we acknowledge the harm done to the very people whose traditions and knowledge we benefit from, and find ways share gratitude and to give back to the people who still inhabit the ancestral homelands we continue to occupy.

Beyond words and gestures of thanks, we contribute financially to land-back efforts.

This tribally-guided nonprofit was created to carry forward the wishes, responsibilities, and long-term vision of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe. My first impressions of Shanghai were the trees! Amidst the sheer volume of humanity and the impressive architecture from many eras and cultures, are tree-lined streets and many parks. The greenery is everywhere, purifying the air and calming the mind—a soothing buffer to the urban bustle. Without even needing to consume them, plants can offer therapeutic benefit just through proximity.

As herbalists and formulators, a large part of our clinical work and many of our Five Flavors Herbs formulas center around supporting the mind-body connection for emotional wellness. We draw from Western, TCM, as well as Ayurvedic herbal traditions to formulate balanced blends to balance the mood, mind and emotions.

October 10th is Global Mental Health Awareness Day, and in the US, October is recognized as a month to screen for depression, and to raise awareness about ADHD. Amongst many human afflictions, struggles with emotional balance, focus, and more extreme states of consciousness, are both common and yet continue to carry social stigma.

And, while pharmaceuticals and psychotherapy play an important--and often life-saving--role in supporting mental health, these modalities may be expensive or hard to access. Furthermore, some medications don't address all symptoms, and/or lead to undesirable side-effects.

That's why we've found natural, complementary approaches that include intentional movement and breathing, dietary changes, vitamins & minerals, and botanicals to be so important to whole-person mental health care!

According to TCM, the fall season is associated with the Metal phase and with two organs: the Lungs and Large Intestine. The shift from late summer into fall can trigger a number of seasonal disturbances that may manifest physically and/or emotionally. On a physical level, we may experience dryness of the lungs, skin and intestines, and we may be more susceptible to respiratory illness. On an emotional and spiritual level, we may find ourselves struggling with heavy feelings that can hit us hard after the light, vivacious days of summer.

Supporting healthy channels and organ systems can bring balance to the body and thereby adjust the associated emotions. Strategies for fall include:
🫁 Strengthen Lung Qi
💧Nourish Lung Yin
🚽Clear Colon Stagnation (sorry, there is no colon emoji!!!)

Our favorite formulas this time of year include:
Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen) found in our Back to School Tincture
Tian Wang Bu Xing Dan (Heavenly Emperor's Special Formula to Tonify the Heart)
Xiao Yao San (Free & Easy Wanderer) found in our Elation Tincture

Five Flavors Herbs founder Benjamin Zappin started running an herbal pharmacy from the very beginning of his acupuncture career. After apprenticing in acupuncture and global herbology with Michael and Lesley Tierra, and honing his medicine-making skills with Thomas Avery Garran, Ben launched a clinic and pharmacy in downtown Santa Cruz in 2004, calling it Five Flavors Acupuncture & Herbal Pharmacy.

In 2013 we opened our retail store and herbal pharmacy in Oakland, California where we served herbalists, acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors and many community members with customized formulas for nearly a decade. We now fill formulas in our Grass Valley, California and ship nationwide. We make most of the tinctures we dispense, and we source high quality granulated extracts from Treasures of the East, based in Ingrid's college town of Ithaca, NY.

Our online ordering platform is easy to use, but for some users there is a significant learning curve! That's why we're offering a free webinar on Wednesday, September 30 from 12-1 PDT to introduce users to the platform and answer your questions. Register through our website or find the Eventbrite link in our bio. https://fiveflavorsherbs.com/classes-events/

If you don't already have an account, we recommend registering now so you can log in and follow along during the webinar. It's free and easy to sign up, whether you're a licensed practitioner, community herbalist, or herbalism student--just be sure to upload proof of your credentials or school enrollment when you apply for your account. https://fiveflavorsherbs.dispensarytree.com/?page=register&
