Your digestive system doesn't clock out when your nervous system clocks in.

Your hormones don't operate independently of your sleep.

And your skin doesn't exist in a completely separate universe from the rest of your physiology.

Yet we often approach health as though every symptom belongs to its own department.

Digestive issue? Focus on the gut.

Fatigue? Focus on energy.

Skin concern? Focus on the skin.

And sometimes that focused approach is exactly what's needed.

But sometimes we're missing important parts of the picture.

The human body is a collection of interconnected systems that are constantly communicating, responding, and adapting.

Which means a symptom in one area may be influenced by what's happening somewhere else.

That doesn't mean everything has one underlying cause. And it certainly doesn't mean every symptom can be explained by stress or nervous-system regulation.

It means we need to remain curious.

We need to ask better questions.

And we need to remember that we're treating a person, not just a collection of symptoms.

Your body is connected. Your healthcare should recognize that. 💚

One of my favorite things about speaking to other healthcare and wellness professionals is getting to explore the questions that don't always get asked.

At DMK's New Era event, we talked about women's health, skin, and some of the exciting innovations happening in aesthetics.

But underneath all of those conversations was a question I think applies to almost every area of healthcare:

What are we asking the body to do, and does it have the resources to do it?

We're often very focused on the intervention.

Which treatment? Which supplement? Which protocol? Which new technology?

And those things can absolutely have value.

But the body doesn't respond to an intervention in isolation.

Sleep, nutrition, inflammation, hormones, stress physiology, medical history, and recovery all contribute to the bigger picture.

That's why I believe understanding the person is just as important as understanding the treatment.

It was such a privilege to share this perspective with the DMK community, and the conversations that followed reminded me why I love teaching so much.

The more we understand about the body, the better questions we can ask.

And sometimes a better question changes everything. 💚

"That's normal."

Two words I wish we were a little more careful with in healthcare.

Because something can be common without being healthy. And something can be a normal physiological experience without being something you simply have to suffer through.

Fatigue. Painful periods. Brain fog. Digestive discomfort. Changes in sleep.

We hear about these things so often that sometimes we stop asking questions about them.

But here's the thing:

Common doesn't automatically mean normal. And normal doesn't automatically mean inconsequential.

Your body changes throughout your life. That's expected.

But when those changes begin interfering with your ability to work, sleep, enjoy your relationships, or simply feel like yourself, I think they deserve a closer look.

Not every symptom is a sign of disease. Not every uncomfortable experience needs treatment.

But you deserve to understand what's happening in your body rather than being told to accept it without question.

That's part of Healing through Recognition: learning the difference between what your body is doing and what those changes may mean for you.

Have you ever been told something was "just normal" when you knew there was more to the story? 💚

We often measure our health by what we’re capable of doing.

Can I work a full day?

Can I exercise again?

Can I make plans after work?

Can I travel?

Can I keep up with everyone else?

Those things can tell us something.

But I want you to start paying attention to something else, too:

What does it cost you to do them?

Being able to push through an eight-hour workday isn’t the only information that matters.

What happens afterward?

Can you make dinner and enjoy your evening?

Or do you immediately collapse on the couch?

How do you feel the next morning?

Are you ready for another normal day—or are you still recovering from the last one?

The same goes for exercise, socializing, travel, parenting, errands, and everything else we ask our bodies to do.

Performance tells us what you can do.
Recovery tells us something about the capacity you have available to do it.

And that’s why I don’t want you measuring progress only by how much you can accomplish.

Start noticing:

How much does this take out of me?

How quickly do I recover?

Do I have anything left afterward?

Am I able to handle something unexpected without completely falling apart?

Those questions give us a much richer picture of what’s happening in the body.

Because healing isn’t just about getting you back to doing more.

It’s about helping you build the capacity to live your life without constantly having to recover from it.

That’s a very different goal. 💚

One of the biggest misconceptions I see about nervous-system health is the idea that resilience means nothing bothers you anymore.

That’s not resilience.

Your car can break down and you’re still allowed to be annoyed.

A difficult conversation can still upset you.

A busy week can still make you tired.

A terrible night of sleep can still leave you reaching for an extra cup of coffee the next morning.

Resiliency isn’t about becoming unaffected by life.

It’s about having enough capacity to respond, adapt, and recover when life inevitably happens.

And sometimes the signs that you’re building that capacity are much quieter than you expect.

Maybe a busy day makes you tired—but it doesn’t wipe you out for the next three.

Maybe something stressful happens and you notice that you settle more quickly afterward.

Maybe you can exercise and still have energy for the rest of your day.

Maybe one poor night of sleep feels lousy, but it doesn’t completely derail your week.

Maybe an unexpected change in plans is frustrating without feeling completely overwhelming.

Or maybe you’re simply able to do more of the things you enjoy without paying for them later.

Those changes matter.

We tend to measure healing by asking:

“Is the symptom gone?”

But there’s another question worth asking:

“How well am I able to recover?”

Because the goal isn’t to create a life where nothing ever asks anything of you.

The goal is to build enough capacity that when life does ask something of you, your entire system doesn’t have to empty the tank to respond.

Resiliency isn’t never being affected. It’s having the capacity to respond, adapt, and recover. 💚

One good day doesn’t mean you have to catch up on every bad one.

I know how tempting it is.

When you haven’t felt well for a while, a good day can feel like someone finally handed you your life back.

Suddenly, you want to do everything you haven’t had the energy to do.

And honestly?

Do some of it.

Please.

Recovery shouldn’t mean becoming afraid of your own life.

Go to dinner with your friends. Take the walk. Play with your kids. Make something. Put music on and clean your kitchen if that genuinely brings you joy.

Use some of that beautiful energy to feel like yourself again.

Just remember that you don’t have to spend every bit of it simply because it’s finally there.

Part of rebuilding capacity is learning that you’re allowed to have something left in the tank.

You don’t have to earn your good day by being productive enough.

You don’t have to use it to make up for the days when you couldn’t do as much.

And you certainly don’t have to prove that you’re “better” by pushing until you’re depleted again.

Let a good day simply be a good day.

That counts, too. 💚

You finally have energy again.

So naturally… you use ALL of it. 😂

You catch up on the laundry. You answer the emails. You go back to the gym. You run the errands. You make dinner plans. You finally tackle the thing that’s been sitting on your to-do list for three weeks.

Because you feel better!

And then?

You crash.

One of the hardest parts of recovery is resisting the urge to use every ounce of capacity the moment we get some of it back.

Feeling better is absolutely something to celebrate. Go for the walk. See your friends. Work in the garden. Do something that reminds you that you are more than whatever symptoms you’ve been dealing with.

But remember:

Having some energy available doesn’t necessarily mean your capacity has been completely restored.

So before you ask:

“Can I do this?”

Try also asking:

“What will it cost me to do this?”

How do you feel afterward?

How do you feel the next morning?

Can your body recover reasonably well from what you asked of it—or does one busy afternoon require two days on the couch?

None of those answers are good or bad.

They’re information.

And learning to recognize that information is part of developing Body Literacy.

Enjoy feeling better without immediately asking your body to prove how much better it is. 💚

I’ve had some version of this conversation with almost every patient who has sat across from me.

By the time someone comes into my office, they’ve often spent months (or years) trying to make their symptoms go away.

They’ve changed their diet. Added supplements. Tried medications. Changed routines. Seen specialists. Read everything they can find.

And underneath all of it is usually the same question:

How do I get my body to stop doing this?

I understand that question. When you don’t feel well, of course you want relief.

But I’ve found that lasting change often begins when we get curious about a different question:

Why might my body be doing this in the first place?

That doesn’t mean ignoring symptoms or pretending they don’t need treatment.

It means recognizing that symptoms don’t happen in a vacuum. Your body has a history. It adapts. It compensates. It prioritizes. And sometimes what looks like dysfunction makes a little more sense when we understand what came before it.

That is the heart of When Your Body Speaks.

I wrote it because I wanted people to have a way to begin understanding their bodies before they needed someone like me to help them interpret what was happening.

Because the goal isn’t to become dependent on someone else to tell you what your body needs.

It’s to become more fluent in the body you live in.

When Your Body Speaks: Learning to understand symptoms as communication instead of failure is available now.

You’ll find it at the link in my bio. 🤍

This weekend, I’m heading to Palm Springs to speak at DMK’s New Era event—and I’m so excited to be part of this conversation. 🌴💚

My session, Healthy Skin Starts Within: Helping Clients Get More From Professional Skincare, explores something I’ve believed for a very long time:

The skin doesn’t exist separately from the rest of the body.

We’ll be talking about some of the biggest trends happening in aesthetics right now—from peptides and PDRN to exosomes and skin longevity, but perhaps more importantly, we’ll look at what those treatments are actually asking the skin to do.

Repair. Rebuild. Regenerate. Produce collagen. Manage inflammation. Recover.

And then we’ll ask the question I think deserves much more attention:

Does the body have the resources to do it?

Because professional skincare can do extraordinary things. My goal isn’t to replace what estheticians are already doing beautifully: it’s to help them understand how nutrition, stress physiology, inflammation, hormones, recovery, and overall health can influence the environment in which those treatments are working.

In other words: how can we support the person attached to the skin?

I’m looking forward to spending the weekend with DMK’s community of skincare professionals, learning from some incredible educators, and hopefully adding a new perspective to the conversation.

And yes, I’ll probably have a lot to say about why cosmetic care is healthcare. 😉

Here’s to a wonderful weekend in Palm Springs.... and a new era for DMK. 💚
