Have you tried your milk before??

I don’t remember trying it myself but I remember my husband trying it. 🤣

Adjusting the plan isn’t failing.

It’s meeting your baby, body and life where they are.

Some of my favorite affirmations sound like..

“My feeding journey doesn’t have to look the way I imagined to still be meaningful and successful.”

“Confidence isn’t sticking to the original plan. Sometimes it’s trusting myself enough to change it.”

“Acceptance can sound like.. This isn’t what I pictured, but I can still find my way forward.”

I know this sounds 🤢 but it’s true! Feeding concerns aren’t always an overnight fix.

Sometimes simple changes like positioning, latch adjustments, pacing, or giving your baby a little more time to organize their movements can make a feed feel better.

🌱 progress doesn’t have to mean everything suddenly looks perfect.

One less painful latch.
A little more milk transferred.
Less clicking.
A calmer bottle.
One feed that felt easier than yesterday.

Those small changes give us information, too. They help us figure out what’s working, what still needs support, and whether we need to look a little deeper.

One better feed per day is still movement in the right direction. 🫶

What’s a feeding win you’ve noticed lately?

pregnancy and infant loss 🤍

Lactation can be an unexpected part of pregnancy or infant loss.

For some parents, this can be incredibly distressing. For others, continuing to express milk may feel comforting or meaningful. Experiences and preferences are highly individual.

For families that chose to stop lactation, care is full of comfort measures tailored to the mum.

🧘‍♂️ cold compress for swelling and discomfort
🧘‍♂️ comfortable bra and clothes without binding
🧘‍♂️ hydration and nourishment for healing
🧘‍♂️ educational support for engorgement

And stopping milk production isn’t the only option.

Some families choose to continue expressing temporarily, keep milk as part of honoring, or milk donation.

Families have shared that continuing lactation after loss has also been described as a meaningful part of their grieving experience.

The support isn’t to tell a family what to do with their milk.

It’s to make sure they know they have options and that support is available for whichever option they choose.

Tell me something we don’t already know 👂

The theory I’m running with is this..

We already put a lot of energy on individual and clinical breastfeeding support, hello, IBCLCs 🫶, yet we’re still seeing a huge drop between breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months.

86% initiate. About 30% make it to 6 months exclusively. 🤢

Longer paid leave may make continued exclusive breastfeeding more achievable.

A 2024 review found that longer maternity leave was consistently associated with longer breastfeeding duration, while earlier return to work was associated with lower odds of meeting breastfeeding recommendations. 👀

That doesn’t mean paid leave is the reason families stop breastfeeding.

But if 6 month exclusive breastfeeding rates are much lower than initiation rates, how much attention should we be giving to the conditions families are expected to breastfeed within?

What do you think most affects breastfeeding continuation after those first few weeks?

Suddenly, every sound, movement, and ceiling fan is more interesting than nursing. 👀😂

Distracted nursing is common as babies become alert and curious about the world around them. It doesn’t necessarily mean your baby is weaning or that something is wrong.

It may look like popping on and off, shorter feeds, latching briefly and smiling, pulling the ni**le with their head, turns towards sounds, movement, pets or eating more frequently when sleepy or overnight…

Lots of families notice this around 3-6 months though it may come and go throughout the first year. 🫠

If nursing has changed suddenly like your baby is consistently refusing feeds, diaper output has decreased, or you are concerned about milk intake or growth, reach out to your pediatrician or IBCLC.

Is your baby going through distracted nursing or have they? What helped?
