▪️In the United States Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week is October 18th – 24th, 2026.

▪️Invisible disabilities, also known as hidden disabilities or non-visible disabilities (NVDs), are disabilities that are not immediately apparent.

▪️Invisible Disabilities are often present with chronic illnesses, chronic pain conditions, mental health conditions, sensory conditions, cognitive conditions, autoimmune conditions, neurological conditions, etc. which interferes with one’s ability to engage in typical activities of daily living.

▪️The CDC reports 61 million people in the U.S. have a disability. Of those 61 million, only 6% use a visible aid to support their disability, such as a cane, wheelchair, walker, service animals, hearing/visual support aids, or other disability accomadation support devices. That means 94% of people with a disability in the United States, have a disability that is not apparent, and do not have disability assistance aids.

𝗘𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁

Every year on , we talk about everyone’s favourite gloomy donkey, Eeyore.

As kids, we innocently laughed at his gloom. As adults, we realise he was living with depression. He had no motivation, no hope, and yet… he was never alone.

Because Eeyore had what so many people silently wish for: a good group of friends.

Pooh, Piglet, and the rest never mocked him or told him to “cheer up.”
They didn’t try to fix him. They simply accepted him.
They kept checking in, inviting him along, and showing up – even when he declined, even when he stayed quiet.

They understood that kindness doesn’t always mean finding the right words. Sometimes it just means being there.

If we can understand that in a children’s story, why do so many forget it in real life?

You never truly know what someone’s carrying.
So, if a friend seems distant, withdrawn, or just “off,” don’t drift away. Reach out. Check in. Ask twice.

But it’s not just friends who need that reminder.

For those working on the front line – in policing, the ambulance service, fire, healthcare, or the military – trauma, stress, risk, harm and danger are not exceptions… they’re part of the job.

They can take the uniform off, but they can’t shed the memories.
Every incident leaves its mark. Every call-out carries something with it.
Over time, carrying all those burdens can feel like pushing water up a hill.

So today, let’s not just recognise the importance of mental health – let’s thank those who quietly carry that weight for others.

Because while they’re the ones people call for help, it’s easy to forget that they sometimes need help too.
And even if they’d never dream of asking for it, we can all go out of our way to remind them that it’s okay to.

Remind them:

You might not be able to solve what they’re going through,
but you can make sure they don’t go through it alone.

Stay safe out there, and look out for each other. 💙
