🍂Fall Eczema: Why Your Skin Struggles When the Seasons Change
🚜Fall in central Illinois brings crisp mornings and harvest season. For people with eczema, it can also bring dry, itchy, irritated skin. At Thrive Healthcare Center, we see eczema flares go up every fall. Here's why, and what helps.
🧴Why Fall Triggers Flares
1. Drier air pulls moisture out of skin that already has a weak barrier.
2. Indoor heat from furnaces, wood stoves, and space heaters dries skin even more.
3. Allergens like ragweed, leaf mold, harvest dust, and dust mites can set off inflammation.
4. Wool and rough fabrics can rub and irritate sensitive skin.
📃Tips for Calmer Skin
-Moisturize within minutes of bathing. Use a thick, fragrance-free cream with ceramides.
-Run a humidifier. Keep indoor humidity between 40% and 60%.
-Take short, warm showers, not hot ones, and pat dry. Apply moisturizer when your skin is still damp.
-Wear soft cotton under wool or flannel.
-Use fragrance-free products, including your laundry detergent.
-Rinse off after outdoor chores to get allergens off your skin.
-Support your skin from the inside. Stay hydrated, manage stress, and pay attention to gut health and nutrition.
📞Make an appointment if:
1. Your symptoms keep getting worse despite good home care
2. You notice oozing, crusting, or other signs of infection
3. Itching is disrupting sleep or daily life
