Today, we remember.
Today, we raise awareness.
Tomorrow, we keep doing the work. 💜

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

We remember the people who lost their lives to overdose—not as statistics, but as people who were loved, needed, and mattered.

We stand with the families and friends who continue to carry their loss.

We recognize the people who survived an overdose and were given another chance.

We celebrate the people living in recovery today.

And we remind anyone who is still struggling that your story is not over.

This week we’ve talked about stigma, naloxone, recognizing an overdose, recovery, and remembering those we’ve lost.

But awareness cannot end when August does.

We keep carrying naloxone.
We keep learning the signs.
We keep talking about substance use without shame.
We keep supporting recovery.
We keep reminding people that asking for help is okay.

And most importantly, we keep choosing compassion over judgment.

To everyone we have lost, everyone who is still struggling, everyone in recovery, and everyone who loves someone affected by substance use:

You matter. Your story matters. And you are not forgotten. 💜

Some people are missing someone today. 💜

Someone who should still be sitting at the table.

Someone whose name is still in their phone.

Someone whose birthday still comes around every year.

Someone they would give anything to hug, call, or hear laugh one more time.

When we talk about overdose, it’s easy to talk about numbers and statistics. But every number represents a person.

A son or daughter.
A mom or dad.
A brother or sister.
A spouse.
A best friend.

And behind every person lost are people who continue carrying their memory.

During Overdose Awareness Week, we remember those who died without judgment or stigma. We honor who they were—not simply how they died.

And to the families and friends who are missing someone:

Their life mattered. Their story mattered. And they are remembered. 💜

An overdose can be part of someone’s story. It doesn’t have to be the ending. 💜

Sometimes we talk about overdose only in terms of loss.

And those losses deserve to be remembered.

But during Overdose Awareness Week, I also want to talk about the people who survived.

The person who overdosed and woke up to another chance.

The person who struggled for years before something finally clicked.

The person who went to treatment more than once.

The person who relapsed and came back.

The person who once couldn’t imagine going a day without using and is now building a life they never thought was possible.

Recovery doesn’t always happen in a straight line, and there is no expiration date on someone’s ability to change.

As long as someone is still here, there is still an opportunity for something different.

People survive.
People recover.
People rebuild.

And sometimes the person everyone had almost given up on becomes the person showing someone else that recovery is possible.

Your story isn’t over. 💜

Would you know an overdose if you saw one? 💜

Overdoses don’t always look the way we expect them to.

Someone may look like they’re sleeping. They may be making snoring or gurgling sounds. Their breathing may become very slow, shallow, irregular—or stop completely.

Some signs to know:

💜 They won’t wake up or respond
💜 Slow, shallow, irregular, or no breathing
💜 Choking, gurgling, or unusual snoring sounds
💜 Very small, pinpoint pupils
💜 Pale, gray, or bluish lips, skin, or fingertips

And here’s the most important part:

You do not have to be certain it’s an overdose before you help.

If you suspect an opioid overdose, call 911, give naloxone if you have it, and stay with the person. Additional doses of naloxone may be needed.

Knowing what an overdose looks like isn’t just information.

It’s something you may someday use to keep someone alive. 💜

Naloxone saves lives. 💜

You don’t have to use opioids to have a reason to carry naloxone.

You might be a parent. A friend. A counselor. A coworker. A neighbor. Or simply a person who happens to be there when someone needs help.

Naloxone can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose and restore breathing. It’s safe, easy to administer, and having it available does not encourage substance use.

It means you’re prepared to save a life.

If you suspect an overdose:
💜 Call 911 immediately.
💜 Give naloxone if available.
💜 Stay with the person until help arrives.
💜 Give additional doses if needed.

Naloxone wears off, so emergency medical care is still necessary even when someone wakes up.

We keep fire extinguishers without expecting a fire. We learn CPR hoping we’ll never need it.

Carrying naloxone is no different.

It’s not about judgment. It’s about making sure someone is alive tomorrow to have another chance at recovery.

Shame doesn’t save lives. Connection can. 💜

One of the biggest barriers to asking for help with substance use isn’t always a lack of resources.

Sometimes, it’s the fear of being judged.

Fear of being called an addict.
Fear of disappointing family.
Fear of people finding out.
Fear of being seen differently.

Stigma can keep people silent—and silence can be dangerous.

During Overdose Awareness Week, we can all do something to change that.

We can talk about substance use disorder without reducing someone to their worst day. We can support recovery without demanding perfection. We can remind people that asking for help is something to be encouraged, not ashamed of.

You never know when the way you respond to someone could be the reason they feel safe enough to ask for help.

Less judgment. More connection. More chances to recover. 💜
