Welcome to Astiva Health's Wellness Series! 👁
Think about the moments that matter most to you. A grandchild's first steps. A family gathering. The faces of the people you love most.
Now imagine slowly losing the ability to see them clearly.
Vision loss affects millions of Americans, and what makes it especially concerning is that many of the most common eye diseases have no early warning signs. Conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy can progress silently for years before you notice anything is wrong.
By the time symptoms appear, significant damage may have already been done.
There is still hope, however, as most vision loss is preventable with early detection. Here's what the CDC recommends to protect your sight:
👓 Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam: It's the only way to detect many common eye diseases in their early stages. Adults 60 and older should get one every 1 to 2 years
👓 Know your family's eye health history: Conditions like glaucoma can run in families, making awareness especially important
👓 Wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100% of UV-A and UV-B radiation: Sun exposure contributes to cataracts and other eye damage over time
👓 Eat for your eyes: Dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, and fish high in omega-3s like salmon and tuna, support long-term eye health
👓 If you have diabetes or high blood pressure: Ask your doctor how often you need an eye exam. Most people with these conditions need one every year
👓 Don't ignore changes: Decreased vision, eye pain, floaters, flashes of light, or circles around light sources are all signs to see a doctor right away
Don't wait for symptoms to tell you something is wrong. Protecting it starts with scheduling a comprehensive eye exam. Your vision connects you to every person and every moment that matters.
