Did you know that breastfeeding can protect you against osteoporosis?! 🤯
Today is World Osteoporosis Day 🦴 which is dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease 🦴
So how does breastfeeding protect you against osteoporosis?
Well during lactation, it actually does the complete opposite! Your breastmilk takes the calcium from your BONES and gives it to your baby! During lactation, your bone mass gets weaker and weaker because not only are you giving your calcium to baby, but your estrogen is lower, and estrogen protects your bones and helps with the absorption of calcium.
But after breastfeeding, your bone loss gets replaced with fresh, new bone. There are tiny micro fractures, which gets replaced and this growth makes your bones even stronger!! 🥳As a bonus, several studies confirm that breastfeeding for longer durations further improves your bone strength!
The recommended amount of calcium a breastfeeding mother needs is 1000mg. I don’t always recommend an additional calcium supplement, but to focus on calcium rich food, which is certainly possible if you’re dairy free! If you want to know what *your* calcium needs are, my hair mineral test is coming next month..stay tune!
