Founded by Janalea Hoffman, music therapist, musician, and educator, this work is rooted in a simple truth: the body responds to rhythm before it responds to words. Sometimes the story behind a piece of music begins long before the person who eventually shares it.

David and the Tone Fairies began with my mother and grandmother during World War II.

My father had been drafted into the Army, and my mother, pregnant with their first child, returned to live with family on the farm.

It was a stressful time.

Music became one of the ways my mother and grandmother responded to that stress, and together they created the original story and music that would eventually become David and the Tone Fairies.

Years later, I found it again.

I modernized it, made it my own, and began using it to help children explore different ways of responding when they feel stressed.

Music.
Nature.
Quiet.
Listening.

I love that something created during a stressful chapter in my own family’s life eventually became something that could help another generation of children find their own moments of peace.

Sometimes music carries more than melody.

Sometimes it carries a story forward.

What do you notice when you stop and really listen to your body?

That's something we'll explore together Thursday evening during my Musical Biofeedback class.

This won't be 90 minutes of me talking while you listen.

We'll use the music together. I'll guide you through experiences that help you become more aware of your breathing, your heartbeat, and other rhythms within your body.

We'll talk about entrainment and what happens as you become more conscious of the relationship between your own rhythms and the rhythm of the music.

And because we're meeting live, we'll have time to talk about what you're noticing, hear what others are experiencing, and ask questions along the way.

Have you ever noticed how long it can take your body to settle after a stressful day?

That's one of the things I was thinking about when I created Musical Biofeedback.

The music begins at 80 beats per minute and very gradually moves to 50 beats per minute.

That gradual change is intentional.

When we're feeling stressed or hurried, our own body rhythms may be moving at a faster pace.

Rather than beginning with very slow music, Musical Biofeedback starts at a rhythm that may feel closer to where you are and then gradually slows.

But there's another piece of this recording that is just as important to me: awareness.

As you listen, I encourage you to notice your breathing, your heartbeat, and other sensations in your body. You're not simply listening to music. You're paying attention to what is happening within you as the rhythm changes.

That's why I called it Musical Biofeedback.

Have you ever noticed what happens in your body when you really pay attention to rhythm?

Most of us move through the day without thinking much about our own rhythms. Our breathing.

Our heartbeat. The pace our bodies seem to carry when we're busy, worried, or trying to slow down.

For years, I've been fascinated by the relationship between musical rhythm and the rhythms within our bodies.

That's part of what led me to create Musical Biofeedback.

On October 22, I'm going to do something I haven't done in quite a while. I'm offering a live, 90-minute Zoom class where we'll explore Musical Biofeedback together.

This won't simply be a class where I talk about the music.

I'll take you through some of the same experiences I've used in workshops and seminars over the years so you can begin noticing your own body rhythms and what happens as you listen and interact with the music.

We'll talk about entrainment, body awareness, and how external rhythms can influence the rhythms we experience within ourselves. And because we'll be together live, there will be time to talk about what you're noticing and ask questions along the way.

Have you ever put on music to help a child settle down… only to wonder why it isn’t working?

We often choose music because it sounds sweet, familiar, or is labeled a lullaby.

But there’s another thing worth noticing:
The rhythm.

Our bodies naturally respond to the rhythms around us. That means a faster rhythm may keep the body more alert, even when the music itself sounds pleasant or is intended to be soothing.

Most of us don’t stop to count beats per minute when we choose music for a child.
I do.

For me, rhythm is part of the intention behind the music. When I want to create a more peaceful experience, I think not only about the melody and instruments, but also about the pace the body is being invited to follow.

That same thinking is behind Children's Relaxation, which was created to help children become aware of their own body rhythms and begin matching them to the rhythm of the music.

Sometimes helping a child settle isn’t only about choosing “calming music.” It’s about choosing music that was intentionally created for that experience.

Why does some music seem to make it easier to settle in and concentrate?

Years ago, I became fascinated by the slower Largo movements of Baroque music.

Many of those pieces move at a pace of around 60 beats per minute. That slower, steady rhythm became the inspiration behind Bathed in Baroque.

I brought together different Largo movements in one recording and recorded the music at a very steady 60 beats per minute. To my knowledge, that hadn't been done before. It was a way of being much more intentional about how music could be used, whether to create an environment for learning or to help encourage slower body rhythms.

I began using this music in workshops with teachers and talking with them about what happens when we create a calmer environment for learning.

Over the years, teachers told me they would play the music quietly in the background during tests or while students were working through something difficult.

That has always stayed with me.

We often think about music as entertainment.

I also think about the environment music creates around us.

Sometimes the right rhythm gives us a quieter place to think.

Sometimes a familiar melody can reach places words cannot.

Over the past few years, I’ve heard from caregivers who have used Classical Twinkle with people living with dementia.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star is a melody many of us have known since childhood.

In Classical Twinkle, that familiar tune is surrounded by rich, adult arrangements with strings, cello, violin, chimes, and other natural instruments. That combination is intentional.

The melody can feel familiar without the music feeling childish.

Caregivers have shared with me again and again that the recording can be calming and can bring memories to the surface, sometimes opening the door to conversation.

I’ve seen this in my workshops, too. It is remarkable how often this familiar melody brings forward memories for adults living with dementia, including those who may have difficulty expressing those memories in other ways.

That is one of the things I love most about music. A familiar melody can create a pathway to something that may otherwise be difficult to reach.

What if instead of telling a child to calm down, we helped them discover how?

That was part of the idea behind my Children’s Relaxation music.

Children are invited to notice their own body rhythms and begin matching them to the rhythm of the music.

It turns calming down into something they can participate in rather than something an adult is simply asking them to do.

I’ve always loved that.

When children begin noticing their breathing, their movement, and the rhythms inside their own bodies, they’re learning something they can carry with them.

It isn’t just, “Sit still and be quiet.”

It’s helping them discover a tool for themselves.

Children are surrounded by stimulation all day. Sometimes giving them a way to notice what is happening inside their own bodies can be a very different kind of gift.

Sometimes our bodies notice stress long before we do.

We may think we're doing fine, yet our breathing becomes shallow, our muscles tighten, or our heart rate quietly speeds up. Our bodies are constantly responding to what's happening around us, often before we're fully aware of it.

This is one of the reasons biofeedback can be so helpful.

It invites us to become more aware of what our bodies have been doing all along. As we notice our own body rhythms alongside the music's gentle rhythm, we begin discovering changes we may never have paid attention to before.

I created Musical Biofeedback using all natural instruments and music that gradually slows from 80 beats per minute to 50 beats per minute. As the music gradually slows, many people begin noticing changes in their own breathing and body rhythms. That growing awareness is at the heart of this recording.

Sometimes healing doesn't begin by doing more.

Sometimes it begins by noticing more.

Can music feel like a massage?

When I composed Musical Massage, my hope was that the music itself would feel like a gentle massage—inviting your body to soften, your breathing to slow, and your mind to rest.

There are days when our minds stay busy long after the work is finished. Our shoulders tighten. Our breathing becomes shallow. Even when we finally have a quiet moment, it can be difficult to truly relax.

With piano, cello, violin, viola, and flute woven together in a steady, peaceful rhythm, Musical Massage was designed simply to help you slow down and let go.

We all need moments that invite us to slow down.
