Watching someone pour that much “liquid gold” down the drain hurts my soul as a lactation specialist.

Seeing blood in your pump fl**ge can be terrifying — but before you panic, let’s talk about what’s actually happening.

Blood-tinged breastmilk can happen with significant ni**le trauma or bleeding inside the breast. And while seeing a large amount of blood is NOT common, you generally do not need to throw your milk away.

In most cases, it is safe for baby to drink.

But here’s the important part: bleeding is a sign that something needs attention. If you’re experiencing pain, ni**le damage, or persistent bleeding, the goal isn’t just to keep feeding through it — it’s to figure out what’s causing the trauma.

You shouldn’t have to choose between protecting your baby and protecting your milk supply.

Comment BLOOD if you want to know what can cause bleeding during pumping or breastfeeding.

Follow for evidence-based breastfeeding information without the panic.

Hearing "wow, my baby is SO strong" as a new parent can actually feel like a proud moment.

But sometimes what looks like strength in those first few weeks is actually your baby compensating for something else.

Years ago, I had an incredibly difficult time breastfeeding my own child, and that painful stress is exactly why I became a lactation specialist. I never want another mother to miss something simply because it was framed as "cute" or "normal."

The truth is, a baby who consistently arches, pushes strongly to one side, or always turns their head the same direction may be dealing with some neck tightness or tension, which can also affect how well they latch and feed.

Here's what's worth paying attention to:
-Your baby always turns or tilts their head to one side, even when you try to reposition them
-They seem to arch or push away strongly during feeds, not just occasionally
-One side of their head looks flatter than the other
-They struggle to latch comfortably on one side but not the other
-They seem stiff or resistant when you try to gently turn their head the other way

If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth having someone look at the full picture together, positioning, latch, and how your baby is moving and feeding, so you know exactly what's going on and what to do next.

That's exactly the kind of thing we work through together in a consultation.

“You should introduce a bottle at 4–6 weeks so your baby gets used to it.”

You’ve probably heard this advice before.

And honestly? I don't think every breastfeeding baby needs a bottle at 4–6 weeks.

If your goal is to exclusively breastfeed and breastfeeding is going well, I don't see a reason to add pumping and bottle-feeding just because someone told you that you should.

In fact, adding extra pumping sessions, bottles, washing parts, and worrying about whether your baby will accept a bottle can create more stress — not less.

If baby is latching well, transferring milk well, gaining appropriately, and breastfeeding is working for you, focus on breastfeeding.

But there is one situation where I do think it makes sense to think ahead:
If you know you're going back to work soon.

In that case, starting to practice around 4 weeks can give you time to:
-introduce a bottle gradually
-figure out which bottle and ni**le work best for your baby
-learn how to pump efficiently
-build a realistic pumping routine
-and, most importantly, give baby time to learn another way of feeding while breastfeeding is still well established.

And notice I said practice — not replace breastfeeding.

You don't need to pump a freezer full of milk or give your baby bottles every day just to “prevent bottle refusal.”

You need a plan that actually makes sense for your baby, your breastfeeding goals, and your life.

Because there is no prize for making feeding more complicated than it needs to be. 😂

Breastfeeding is already a full-time job. You don't need to create extra work unless you actually need the flexibility.

If you're planning to return to work and want to know when and how to introduce pumping and bottles without unnecessarily disrupting breastfeeding, that's exactly what we can work through together.

Follow for realistic breastfeeding & infant-feeding support.

The hack is this simple: warmth can help your milk flow more easily.

Sometimes, the problem isn't that your pump “isn't working.”

Your body may simply need a little help getting into the right state for milk to flow.

Try gentle warmth for a few minutes before pumping.

A warm compress, warm washcloth, warm breast packs, or even a warm shower can help you relax the breast tissue and may make your let-down and milk flow easier.

And here's the important part:
Warm does not mean HOT.

You don't need to heat your breast aggressively, massage hard, or “force” the milk out.

Think gentle warmth + relaxation + effective milk removal.

And if you're pumping and constantly feeling like:
→ it takes forever for milk to start flowing
→ you get very little despite pumping frequently
→ pumping is painful or uncomfortable
→ or you're wondering whether your pump or fl**ge is the problem

…that's worth looking at more closely.

Because sometimes a small adjustment in technique, fl**ge fit, settings, or timing can make a much bigger difference than simply pumping longer.

Save this for your next pumping session.

And if pumping still feels like a struggle, comment MILK and I'll send you the details for booking a consultation at Lactation Station.

Don’t choose a bottle just by the brand. Look at the shape.

As an IBCLC, one of the first things I look at when choosing a bottle is the shape of the ni**le — especially how it compares to what happens when a baby latches directly at the breast.

Here’s what I mean:

1- Long, narrow ni**les with a wide, flat base — like the shape found in Philips Avent and similar designs — can encourage some babies to take a more shallow latch, with the ni**le sitting mostly toward the front of the mouth. Some babies may compensate with more gum compression or a more straw-like sucking pattern.

2- Gradual-slope ni**les, like Evenflo Balance+, are closer to the shape I prefer. At the breast, the breast tissue is soft and elastic and expands to fill the baby’s mouth. A gradual-slope ni**le can provide a shape that is more compatible with that oral experience and gives the tongue more room to do its job.
Pigeon and Lansinoh are other examples of bottles with this type of gradual-slope design.

And then there’s Dr. Brown’s 👀

I actually like the gradual slope of Dr. Brown’s. My concern is the relatively narrow base. This can be a great fit for some smaller or premature babies, but as babies grow, that narrow base may become less appropriate — and I often want babies to graduate to a wider ni**le.

And remember: there is no one bottle that is perfect for every baby. Oral anatomy, feeding skills, flow rate, milk transfer, and the individual baby all matter.

So this isn't about saying “this brand is bad.”

It's about understanding what the ni**le is asking your baby to do.

Because the goal isn't simply to get milk into the baby.

The goal is to make bottle-feeding as compatible with baby's natural feeding skills as possible.

If you're overwhelmed by all the bottle options, that's exactly why I keep a curated selection of feeding products at Lactation Station — products I personally choose based on my experience as an IBCLC.

POV: someone told you to use a ni**le shield… so here’s how to put one on 👀

…and then… 🗑️😏

Disclaimer: this reel is for entertainment purposes. 🤍 I know ni**le shields can be a very helpful tool for some breastfeeding parents, and this is absolutely not meant to shame anyone who has used one or found success with one.

That said… as an IBCLC, I’m pretty picky about when I recommend them.

A ni**le shield can sometimes be useful in very specific situations, such as:

• some premature babies who are struggling with direct breastfeeding
• a baby who is transitioning from bottle-feeding back to the breast
• very select cases of flat or inverted ni**les when positioning, latch adjustments, and other techniques have not worked

But notice the pattern: specific situations. Last resort. Individualized plan. Close follow-up.

Because a ni**le shield can also create a whole new set of problems — and sometimes it ends up masking the reason breastfeeding wasn’t working in the first place.

My goal isn't simply to help a baby get onto the breast.
My goal is to help baby and breast work together as efficiently as possible.

So no, I don't hate ni**le shields. 😅
I just don't believe they should be the automatic answer to every latch problem.

And if you do need one? You should know why, how to use it, how to monitor milk transfer and supply, and when the plan is to move away from it.

As the Little Prince might say:

“You become forever responsible for the ni**le shield you recommend.” 🌹🦊

Use the tool wisely.
And if breastfeeding is difficult, let's figure out why before simply adding another piece of equipment.
