🩸 LOW IRON? THERE’S MORE TO THE STORY THAN JUST TAKING AN IRON SUPPLEMENT!
Are you constantly tired, feeling weak, losing more hair than usual, struggling with brain fog, or getting short of breath with activities that used to be easy?
You might be dealing with low iron — even if you’ve been told your blood count is normal!
At Riverside Medical, we believe in helping you understand what’s happening inside your body, not just treating a number on a lab report. 💚
🔬 LESSON #1: NOT ALL IRON LABS TELL THE SAME STORY.
When evaluating possible iron deficiency, several lab markers can help us see the bigger picture:
🩸 Ferritin: Measures your body’s stored iron. Low ferritin can be an early sign of iron deficiency, even before anemia develops.
🩸 Serum Iron: Measures iron circulating in your blood at the time of testing. It can fluctuate throughout the day.
🩸 Iron Saturation: Helps show how much of your iron-transporting protein is carrying iron.
🩸 TIBC: Helps us understand your body’s capacity to transport iron.
🩸 CBC (Complete Blood Count): Looks at hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell size, and other clues that may suggest anemia.
🩸 CRP: Measures inflammation, which can affect how we interpret ferritin levels.
💡 Here’s what many people don’t realize: You can have low iron stores BEFORE your hemoglobin drops!
That means a normal hemoglobin result doesn’t always rule out iron deficiency.
🔎 LESSON #2: WHY IS YOUR IRON LOW IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Taking iron may help replenish your stores, but it’s also important to understand WHY they’re low.
Some common contributors include:
✔️ Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
✔️ Not getting enough iron through your diet
✔️ Difficulty absorbing iron due to certain digestive conditions
✔️ Medications that reduce stomach acid
✔️ H. pylori infection or celiac disease
✔️ Chronic inflammation that changes how your body handles iron
✔️ Blood loss from the gastrointestinal tract
If we don’t identify the underlying cause, low iron may keep coming back!
🥩 LESSON #3: WHAT HELPS YOUR BODY ABSORB IRON?
What you eat — and what you pair it with — can make a difference!
🥩 Heme iron from foods like beef, oysters, and sardines is generally absorbed more efficiently than plant-based iron.
🥬 Plant-based iron from beans, lentils, spinach, and other foods is still valuable!
🍊 Vitamin C can improve absorption of plant-based iron. Try pairing iron-rich foods with citrus, strawberries, kiwi, or bell peppers.
☕ Coffee and tea can reduce iron absorption when consumed with iron-rich meals.
🥛 Calcium supplements may interfere with iron absorption when taken at the same time.
Small changes in how you eat can help your body make better use of the iron you’re getting!
💊 LESSON #4: MORE IRON ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER.
This is IMPORTANT!
Not everyone with fatigue or an abnormal iron result needs an iron supplement.
Inflammation can sometimes make iron difficult for your body to use, even when iron is present in storage.
And taking too much iron can cause side effects and, in some situations, be harmful.
For people with confirmed iron deficiency, iron supplementation may be recommended. Sometimes every-other-day dosing can improve tolerability and absorption, but the right dose and schedule depend on the individual.
Please don’t start high-dose iron supplements based on symptoms alone.
❤️ LESSON #5: YOUR BODY NEEDS MORE THAN IRON TO MAKE HEALTHY RED BLOOD CELLS.
Other nutrients matter, too!
✨ Vitamin B12 supports healthy red blood cell formation and nervous system function.
✨ Folate helps your body produce new cells, including red blood cells.
✨ Copper helps your body transport and use iron.
✨ Vitamin B6 plays a role in hemoglobin production.
Deficiencies in these nutrients can sometimes contribute to anemia or complicate the picture.
🩺 SO WHAT’S THE TAKEAWAY?
If you’re experiencing fatigue, hair shedding, weakness, brain fog, or other symptoms that could be related to low iron, don’t assume it’s something you just have to live with.
And don’t assume that taking more iron is automatically the answer.
The goal is to:
✅ Understand your lab results.
✅ Determine whether you’re truly iron deficient.
✅ Look for possible causes.
✅ Choose the right treatment when needed.
✅ Follow up to make sure your levels are improving.
💚 At Riverside Medical, we believe better health starts with better understanding.
Your symptoms matter. Your lab results matter. And finding the reason behind the problem matters!
📲 Contact Riverside Medical to schedule an appointment and discuss whether iron testing may be appropriate for you.
Because sometimes the answer isn’t simply MORE iron — it’s understanding what your body actually needs. 💚
