Taking care of your FMA dues? It’s also an opportunity to join your local physician community.

Physicians can pay their FMA and ECMA dues at the same time, making this a convenient time to become part of the Emerald Coast Medical Association.

ECMA brings the local perspective to organized medicine through physician advocacy, continuing education, and opportunities to connect with colleagues across Northwest Florida.

Whether you are new to the region or have practiced here for years, we welcome your experience and your voice.

Chronic kidney disease will not have symptoms until it is very advanced. A lot of people are waiting to feel something before they go to the doctor, but by the time you feel it, your kidney function has already dropped very low.

Sherryl Mitchell Hernandez, MD, says the screening is simple: a basic metabolic panel and a urine test called a microalbumin creatinine ratio. Once a year. Even when your kidney function looks normal, that test can catch damage from diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity before it becomes irreversible.

One test. Once a year. Ask your doctor for it. Catch up on Episode 23 of the .

Strong patient care takes a dedicated team.

During PA Week, ECMA recognizes the physician assistants who work alongside physicians throughout Northwest Florida. Their clinical expertise, collaboration, and commitment to patients are valued throughout our medical community.

To the PAs serving our region: thank you for the work you do and the care you bring to your patients every day.

Sherryl Mitchell Hernandez, MD, thinks the kidneys are the most important organs in the body. They have their own brain inside. They are capable of managing homeostasis on their own. And here is the part most people do not know: blood pressure is managed in the kidneys, not the heart.

She is a nephrologist with Nephrology Associates here in Panama City who chose this specialty because of a promise she made her father at five years old. On this episode she talks with Dr. Don Davis about kidneys, loss, purpose, and why this organ deserves more attention than it gets.

Listen to Episode 23 of the now.

Sherryl Mitchell Hernandez, MD, knew she was going to be a nephrologist since she was five years old. Her father was on dialysis. He had a condition called glomerulonephritis, an autoimmune inflammation of the kidneys, and both of his kidneys failed. She used to go with him to his appointments and touch his arm where his fistula was.

She would tell him, "Daddy, don't worry. When I grow up, I'm going to become a kidney transplant doctor, and I'm going to save you."

That promise carried her through medical school, a fellowship at Baylor, and eventually to the Emerald Coast. Her story is coming in Episode 23 of the .

What a New Blood Test Means for Early Alzheimer’s Detection

For decades, diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease relied almost entirely on clinical judgment: a physician’s conversation with the patient, a history from family members, and a set of standard questions. That has changed. Khurram Nazir, MD, a board-certified neurologist and a past Emerald Coast Medical Association board member, explains what is new and why it matters.
