What you see isn’t always what’s happening.
The lights in this video make it hard to tell what you’re actually seeing. 😂
And honestly, it reminds me of working with patients.
Sometimes the presentation is complicated. Sometimes what you see doesn’t tell the whole story. And sometimes you have to slow down, ask questions, and look a little deeper.
As a PT, I’ve learned that the first thing you notice isn’t always the full picture.
Every patient deserves that extra curiosity!

Being a physical therapy student opened my eyes to a whole new world.
It taught me how to become a better problem solver, but it also gave me so much more.
I made lifelong friends, found mentors, and built relationships with faculty who supported and challenged me along the way. Being a student also gave me the chance to experience different clinical settings and figure out what kind of PT I wanted to become.
And yes… I even got to live in Maui, HI while treating patients and exploring the island. 🌺🌊
Looking back, becoming a PT wasn’t just about learning how to treat patients. It was about discovering where this career could take me!

Somewhere along the way, I learned that my body moves a little differently—and that my flexibility is not exactly a party trick. 😂
So yes… that awkward video of me demonstrating my flexibility is very much intentional.
Learning about my hypermobility gave me a completely different perspective on being a patient.
I’ve been in and out of physical therapy, learning what works for my body and how to manage the things that come with it.
Being a PT doesn’t make you immune to needing one.
Sometimes you’re the clinician.
Sometimes you’re the patient.
And sometimes you’re awkwardly demonstrating just how far your joints can move on camera. 😂

Before we talk about careers, let’s talk about the teams that keep us healthy.
Healthy Teams is designed for Junior Girl Scouts (grades 4–5), introducing them to the systems in their bodies and the healthcare professionals who work together to support them.
It’s not part of the original Physical Therapy Fun Patch series celebrating its anniversary in 2027—but it’s helping us get the ball rolling toward what’s next. Because understanding healthcare starts with understanding that no one works alone.
And who knows? Learning about the team today might inspire a future healthcare professional tomorrow.
15 years in motion. And we’re just getting started!

As grateful as I am for how I was introduced to physical therapy, I believe more people should be introduced to PT before an illness or injury occurs.
That’s one reason I created the Physical Therapy Fun Patch Program.
Healing People, Changing Lives® is designed for Girl Scouts in 11th–12th grade to explore physical therapy as a career and learn what it takes to pursue it.
Scouts are encouraged to connect with local physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and PT students to hear about their experiences, ask questions, and get a closer look at the profession.

Plot twist: my knee wasn't the end of my patient story
I recovered from my ACL and meniscus injury and was ready to keep moving.
Then life said… “Not so fast.” 😅
A benign abdominal growth ruptured, and I ended up needing major abdominal surgery.
So, once again: Patient. Recovery. Starting over.
This experience taught me a lot about the important of a strung support system. My teammates, classmates, friends and especially my family provided guidance, resources, encouragement and more through my challenges.
As an advocate, I often reflect on why I wasn't referred to physical therapy services? I wonder how my health may be different today if I had received services then?

High school me was busy — class, practice, Girl Scouts and clubs.
Then I tore my ACL and meniscus.
And suddenly, my focus changed.
I was able to walk and do my day to day tasks
But I was no longer able to cut, run or jump safely
I was 16 years old
I had loss my physical stability to be agile
Our ACL provides stability to our knee joint
I needed to have surgery if I wanted to play basketball again
I would have to wear braces for a short period of time
After surgery, I would then be introduced to Physical therapy!

I started taking students in the clinic as a clinical instructor, then moved into guest lecturing, mentoring, and eventually teaching full time.
I still work with students in the clinic today.
Because teaching isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about figuring things out together, learning from mistakes, and trying again.
Even when you’re frustrated like me in this video. 😅
Somehow, I found a career I love in helping the next generation find their wings.
