In 1998, Greg watched his 80-year-old mother take a hammer to a childproof pill bottle. She refused his help: "When you're not here, I need to be able to do it."
He thought it was ridiculous. Now he's 73, living with the same hereditary ATTR, and the neuropathy in his hands makes that bottle a fight of its own.
The hammer is still in his junk drawer. But Greg's story isn't really about the bottle. It's about the week he finally asked his wife to open the milk carton, 51 years into their marriage.
"It felt good," he writes.
