Therapeutic Harp Foundation

Therapeutic Harp Foundation Visit us at http://www.therapeuticharp.org The Harp Foundation, founded in May of 2000, evolved from Hospice of the Valley’s Integrative Therapeutics Program (formerly known as Complementary and Alternative Therapies).

In order to expand the harp program into the West Valley and surrounding areas, The Harp Consortium was formed as a separate, non-profit organization providing harp music to individuals in need. The Harp Foundation’s founding members were Hospice of the Valley Sun Health Corporation, Interfaith Services and Sun Cities Area Ministerial Association. In 2016, to better fit the mission of the foundation, The Harp Foundation became known as the Therapeutic Harp Foundation (THF).

Doctors Now Prescribing Music Therapy for Heart Ailments, Brain Dysfunction, Learning Disabilities, Depression, PTSD, Alzheimers, Childhood Development and More - Didge Project

The Therapeutic Harp Foundation serves the greater Phoenix community by providing Harp music at the bedside to ease pain, anxiety, and promote healing. This year, we've touched the lives of over 195,000 patients, their family members, caregivers and medical staff. We wouldn't be able to do this without the generous support of our friends and family. Thank you for your continued support. Great things are coming in 2020 as we get ready to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Music has proven time and again to be an important component of human culture and is now being seen as music therapy in many medical environments.

Why therapeutic harp? The National Standards Board for Therapeutic Musicians describes the differences between therapeutic musicians and music therapists beautifully.

Therapeutic harpists use the science of sound to enhance the clinical healing of patients based on their immediate needs, while music therapists develop long-term strategies to help patients with specific goals.

Dr. Anthony Komaroff of Harvard Medical School described the connection between health and music on pages 4-5 of the Longwood Seminars on April 14, 2015:

"How does music exert these benefits? Some research suggests that music may promote the brain's ability to make new connections between nerve cells.

Another idea is that it works its magic through its rhythms. Humans are rhythmic beings: Our heartbeat, breathing, and brain waves are all rhythmic. The human brain and nervous system are hard-wired to distinguish music from noise and to respond to rhythm and repetition, tones
and tunes."

The patient looked to be in their early 70's and had a twinkle in their eye. When I came in, they kidded me: "Just like the angels!"

After playing a little bit, they asked about the harp. "Are you a musician yourself?" I asked. "Yes!" they said. "I played in a country band for decades until I lost the tip of my left right finger."

We talked about Harpo, Merle and how music and Phoenix had both changed over the decades.

There is something special when musicians talk. Maybe it's the secret languages that twins are said to share? "Music is putting your heart in your hands, and your hands on your instrument," the patient said.

Did you know?? On this day in history, Archaeologist Howard Carter discovered King Tutankhamun's tomb and unearthed what life was like in Ancient Egypt! Egypt is the home for some of the oldest depictions of harpists, for which we are grateful.

In 2019, the Therapeutic Harp Foundation is poised to pursue scientifically sound, solid evidence for the benefits of live therapeutic harp music in healthcare settings to help people like you in our communities.

Join us in empowering the healthcare community -- patients and their families, caregivers and professional medical staff -- to reduce pain and anxiety, participate in life-altering research and raising awareness of the benefits of live therapeutic harp music.

"My mom received a call one evening that would impact the lives of long-time family friends as I sat on the couch and watched the news. The family was in a fatal accident with a semi-truck parked off in the shoulder of the freeway. Their 12-year-old son was killed and their youngest was in critical condition. Years of surgeries, doctor's appointments and complications for their youngest came and went by with progress.

I visited the family during one of their son's hospital stays, and the therapeutic harpist Jocelyn Obermeyer came to play. Nurses coming to check up on the patient were amazed at his near-normal vitals and even more astonished by his laughing and general cranial movement. Our faces brightened up again as we could tell his pain levels subsided and anxiety was soothed.

This is why I support THF and I hope you would consider supporting their mission, too."

One of our goals for 2019 includes two (2) new research projects -- one at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) and one at the Mayo Clinic Hospital -- that will provide scientific validity for the positive medical outcome of the therapeutic harp music for both young babies and patients at the end of life.

In 2018, THF harpists are expected to deliver over 2,330 hours of therapeutic harp music to 160,000 patients in 29 healthcare facilities throughout the Valley.

What Is Therapeutic Music?

Music for Healing & Transition Program's Founder Laurie Riley answers the question "What is Therapeutic Music?" in a beautiful way!

"Therapeutic musicians focus on meeting a patient’s present needs with therapeutic music in-the-moment, rather than having the intention of accomplishing a specific goal or outcome."

Read more of her empowering words at: https://www.mhtp.org/what-is-therapeutic-music/

Paraphrasing one of the co-founders of MHTP, Laurie Riley➚: It is well-known and documented that music has been used for millennia, formally and informally, to change, create, or enhance moods and to help relieve suffering.  Therapeutic music is music that is intended to alleviate a physical, em...

General information

The difference between performance harp and therapeutic harp is in the intent of the musician. Therapeutic harpists do not focus on themselves and their abilities as musicians. The music they play serves the needs of the patients, caregivers and professional medical staff.
