Got this question on a recent post and wanted to answer it here too!

We do recommend a 12-14 hour fast overnight for metabolic health. That could be as simple as finishing dinner by 6 and eating breakfast around 7 or 8. Most of it happens while you’re asleep.

Where we pump the brakes is going past 14 hours, especially for women. Our hormones are really sensitive to not getting enough energy, and longer fasts can bump up cortisol, throw off your cycle and thyroid, and cost you muscle.

More isn’t better here. If you want help figuring out what timing works for you, that’s what we’re here for. Link in bio

Most of our clients come in already knowing what they “should” be eating. The hard part is doing it on a Tuesday when work runs late and there’s a soccer practice at 6.

If that’s you, it usually means the plan wasn’t built for your life.

Our newest blog post covers why rigid meal plans tend to fall apart, what working with a dietitian looks like day to day, and who we work with (not just people trying to lose weight).

Most people come to us asking what they should cut out. Honestly? We’d rather talk about what you can add.

Here are three questions we walk clients through all the time:

When am I eating?
If you’re going 6+ hours without food, your energy (and your mood) usually lets you know. Eating every 3–4 hours helps keep things steadier and supports your hormones too.

What’s on my plate?
Look for a protein, some fiber, a little fat, and something with color. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Adding a hard-boiled egg to your toast or some berries to your yogurt counts.

What else could I add?
Herbs, spices, a handful of greens, a squeeze of lemon. These are easy ways to add flavor and nutrients without overhauling what you already like to eat.

You don’t need a new set of rules. Just a few small tweaks to what’s already working.

A well-stocked pantry makes it so much easier to throw together a meal or snack when you’re short on time. A few of our go-tos:

Rice cakes are a crunchy blank canvas. Go sweet with peanut butter and banana, or savory with cottage cheese and avocado.

Tuna packets are about as easy as protein gets. Tear one open and toss it on a salad or grain bowl. They come in a bunch of flavors, so you won’t get bored.

A Dove chocolate is sometimes all you need when a sweet craving hits. No guilt required.

Roasted chickpeas are crunchy, salty, and packed with fiber and protein, so they actually keep you full between meals. Easy to throw in your bag, too.

And don’t sleep on canned pumpkin! It’s loaded with vitamin A and fiber, and it blends right into smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, and baked goods.

None of this has to be complicated. Keep a few of these on hand and a balanced snack is never far away.

October in Pennsylvania is one of the best times of year to eat local 🍎🎃

Farm stands and markets around Phoenixville are packed right now with:

🍏 Apples and pears
🎃 Pumpkins and winter squash (butternut, acorn, delicata)
🍠 Sweet potatoes
🥕 Root veggies like beets, carrots, and parsnips
🥦 Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts
🥬 Kale, spinach, and Swiss chard
🍄 Mushrooms (PA grows more than any other state!)

In-season produce is picked closer to peak ripeness, which means more flavor and often a better price. A few easy ways to use it this week:

Roast a sheet pan of squash, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes for easy meal prep
Add sliced apples or pears to oatmeal or yogurt
Toss kale or spinach into soups and chili as the weather cools

Can creatine help you hold onto muscle as you age? A new study suggests it might. 💪

Researchers at Texas A&M followed 64 adults ages 45-65 for 12 weeks. Half took creatine (10 g/day) and half took a placebo. Some kept their routine the same, while others started a strength and cardio program with a small calorie deficit.

Here’s what they found:

✨ Creatine takers gained lean mass, even without exercising or changing their diet
✨ Adding exercise led to bigger strength gains and a greater drop in body fat percentage
✨ It was well tolerated, with rare, mild side effects similar to placebo
✨ Some memory measures improved too, but the researchers consider those results early and exploratory

A few things to keep in mind: this was a small study, and the dose (10 g/day) was higher than the typical 3-5 g. Creatine works best alongside strength training and enough protein, and it isn’t right for everyone. Talk with a dietitian before starting, especially if you have kidney concerns or take medications.
