Did you know the VA may help pay for a ramp or roll-in shower in your own home? πΊπΈ
The HISA grant is a VA health care benefit that covers medically necessary changes to a veteran's primary residence β things like a permanent ramp, a roll-in shower, or accessible sinks and counters.
Two things most people don't realize:
- It's a lifetime benefit, not something you claim every year.
- Depending on your disability rating, it can cover up to $6,800 β or up to $2,000 for other eligible, medically justified needs.
And one that saves a lot of disappointment: stairlifts and vertical platform lifts are NOT covered under HISA.
We put together a plain-English guide to who qualifies, what's covered, what's excluded, and exactly what goes in the application package.
HISA grants pay up to $6,800 toward medically necessary home modifications for Veterans. Learn who qualifies, what's covered, and how to apply in 2026.
