Our next 2026 Distinguished Award winner is someone who knows just how much compassion can mean to a patient. 🏆

Brett Palestra, RT(T)(CT), of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, is the recipient of the 2026 ACMS Benjamin Rush Individual Award.

For the past 15 years, Mr. Palestra has made it his mission to help patients navigate some of the hardest moments of their lives. As Lead Brachytherapist at UPMC Magee-Womens, a role he has held since 2017, he takes time to build trust, put patients at ease, and bring a little laughter into an otherwise difficult experience.

But his path to healthcare wasn’t exactly a straight line. Before becoming a radiation therapist, Mr. Palestra worked as a police officer. When a female coworker was diagnosed with breast cancer, seeing what she went through inspired him to change careers and return to school. He wanted to be there for people during some of life’s most vulnerable moments, and he found a way to do just that.

Today, Mr. Palestra understands that even small moments can make a meaningful difference in a patient’s journey. He approaches each interaction with care and compassion, recognizing what a privilege it is to support people during such a vulnerable time.

His dedication is a reminder that compassionate care goes beyond treatment. It’s also about the people who show up, build trust, and help patients feel a little less alone.

Congratulations, Mr. Palestra, on this well-deserved honor! 👏🏻

We’re continuing our 2026 Distinguished Awards spotlight! 🏆

Next up: The Children's Institute, recipient of the 2026 ACMS Benjamin Rush Community Award.

For more than 124 years, The Children’s Institute has been supporting children and families throughout the Pittsburgh region and beyond.

Today, The Children’s Institute provides a wide range of services, including education, therapeutic and behavioral health programs, early intervention, autism services, and family support.

Through its mission to “Heal. Teach. Empower. Amaze.,” The Children’s Institute works alongside children, youth, and families to improve quality of life and help every child reach their full potential.

The organization’s commitment to inclusion, opportunity, and community health reflects the spirit of the Benjamin Rush Community Award and the lasting impact of those who work to make their communities healthier and stronger.

We’re kicking off our 2026 Distinguished Awards spotlight! 🏆

First up: Thomas P. Campbell, MD, MPH, FACEP, recipient of the 2026 ACMS Spirit of Service Award.

For more than 35 years, Dr. Campbell has dedicated his career to caring for patients, supporting physicians, and strengthening Pittsburgh’s healthcare community.

As Chief Wellness Officer for Allegheny Health Network, Dr. Campbell has been a strong advocate for removing barriers that can keep physicians from seeking mental health care. He helped lead changes to AHN’s credentialing process in 2023, removing unnecessary questions about past mental health treatment that could make physicians fear that seeking help might jeopardize their careers. Pennsylvania later made similar changes to its state physician licensing process.

That same commitment helped shape the ACMS Physician Wellness Program. Dr. Campbell was there from the beginning, helping our team create a resource where physicians throughout Allegheny County can access confidential, independent mental health support without employer involvement.

From emergency medicine to leadership to advocacy for a healthier medical profession, Dr. Campbell has continually found ways to serve the people around him - and to make it safer for physicians to seek support when they need it.

Congratulations, Dr. Campbell, on this well-deserved honor! 👏🏻

We’ll be celebrating our 2026 Distinguished Award recipients throughout October and November, so stay tuned for more!

PHYSICIAN VOICES MATTER IN HARRISBURG!! 🏛️💙

On September 29, ACMS members took their voices to Harrisburg for the Pennsylvania Medical Society Legislative Advocacy Day, joining physicians from across the Commonwealth to connect directly with state lawmakers and advocate for the issues shaping medicine and health care in Pennsylvania.

Our members tackled some of the biggest issues facing health care today, including medical liability reform and venue, measles and public health, and the growing role of private equity, bringing the physician perspective straight to the policy conversation.

As advocacy becomes an even bigger part of ACMS’s strategic plan, opportunities like Advocacy Day are an important part of putting that commitment into action. It’s not just about talking legislation. It’s about building relationships, sharing real experiences from the front lines of medicine, and making sure the voices of physicians in Allegheny County are part of the conversation.

Shoutout to our ACMS members who made the trip to Harrisburg. And thank you to PAMED for bringing physicians from across Pennsylvania together for a day of connection, advocacy, and engagement. 🫶🏻
