You do not beat a wave.

You can be strong, you can be stubborn, you can throw everything you have at it, and it will take your feet anyway and move you down the shore before you ever agreed to go. For a long time I fought that, the way most of us are taught to, certain that if I pushed hard enough I could hold my ground. What I learned, slowly, and not gracefully, is how little of it was ever mine to hold.

The water was not out to pull me under. It was only moving the way it moves, and the day I stopped spending myself against it and let it take me, it left me further along than I could have reached by force, still standing, somewhere I would not have known to go on my own.

August works the way that water does, so I have written the whole month as one long passage through it, in four movements. The tide drawing back. The wave. The set of the water. The deep, and the shore beyond it.

This is the last Sunday piece of the month, and it takes the place of the usual weekly guidance.

This is the deepest week of August, and it runs deeper than the first eclipse did. The Sun moves into Virgo, and your attention goes practical and fine-grained, wanting to sort and name what is actually in front of you. Then Thursday hands you the clearest hour of the month, and hours behind it the lunar eclipse in Pisces asks you to go somewhere that clarity cannot reach. What you have kept buried comes up on its own schedule, and the schedule is rarely yours.
