Pitt leadership celebrates the formal opening of Fifth and Halket, the newest state-of-the-art building in Oakland that serves as home to SHRS and to the School of Medicine’s Departments of Cell Biology and of Computational and Systems Biology.

With most SHRS programs now under one roof, Fifth and Halket creates new opportunities for interprofessional education, collaboration and hands-on learning across our school’s degree and certificate programs.

"Approximately 60% of the U.S. health care workforce is made up of allied health professionals like the dedicated instructors and graduates of this school. It’s important for people to realize that it’s not just one profession helping our communities, it’s the collaboration of all those health care professions, and a building like this allows for that collaboration to really take root." - SHRS Dean Jimmy Oñate

A place for nutrition-minded students to connect, learn and grow! 🥗

The Pitt SHRS Student Nutrition Organization (SNO), formerly known as the Student Dietetic Association, is creating a welcoming community for students interested in food, nutrition and dietetics. Any Pitt student is welcome to join!

The organization aims to increase the awareness of nutrition-related issues and the significance of the dietetic profession through programming and mentorship from professionals in the field.

"Nutrition encompasses food, health, science and community, and dietetics is one professional pathway within that broader space. We wanted a name that welcomes all students interested in food and nutrition while continuing to celebrate and support the dietetics profession.” - Caroline Passerrello, assistant professor and community coordinator in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition, on the importance of broadening the group’s focus with its recent name change.

💻 Meet Chris Bloss, a 2026 graduate of Pitt’s online Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) program!

After 22 years as a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon, Bloss wanted to explore what could come next in his career. His passion for medicine, technology and lifelong learning led him to health informatics.

“I’m a lifelong learner. I knew I was not going to operate forever and as much as I love operating, I also love computers.” - Bloss

Bloss gained the knowledge and skills to pursue his goal of becoming a Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO), an executive level position that bridges clinical practice and health care technology.

Advancing mental health care for stroke survivors with aphasia! 🧠

William S. Evans, associate professor in Pitt's Department of Communication Science and Disorders, is leading a five-year, $3.17 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded project alongside an interprofessional team of researchers focused on mental health improvements in stroke survivors with aphasia, a language disorder that affects the ability to speak, read, write and comprehend.

Through an innovative approach combining acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with individualized communication strategy training, Evans and his team aim to help people with aphasia reconnect with their lives, build meaningful connections and navigate the challenges of communication.

Learning together to prepare for critical moments. 🤝🚑

On Monday, September 28, students from Pitt Athletic Training (AT) and Pitt Emergency Medicine Program (EM) came together in the new lab spaces at Fifth and Halket for a collaborative educational experience focused on the recognition and management of exertional heat illness (EHI).

Supported by an Interprofessional Seed Grant, the initiative gave students the opportunity to apply best-practice guidelines, practice rapid decision-making and experience how different health care professionals work together during a medical emergency.

From early recognition and assessment to rapid cooling and coordinated medical management, the experience emphasized the importance of communication, collaboration and role clarity when every second matters.

🔬 Meet Otto Williams, the 2026 Undergraduate Student Summer Research Award recipient!

A Frederick Honors College student, Williams spent his summer exploring the biological impacts of resistance training through research at Neuromuscular Research Laboratory (NMRL) of the University of Pittsburgh, working alongside project mentor Chris Kargl, assistant professor in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition.

The Undergraduate Student Summer Research Award provides Pitt undergraduate students with the opportunity to expand their research experiences while working with SHRS faculty mentors.

"This mentorship, coupled with his extensive experience in the field, has significantly enhanced my knowledge, particularly when compared to my research experience prior to collaborating with Chris. I am profoundly grateful for the mentorship I have received from Chris and all of the faculty at the NMRL." - Williams
