Me: “Boundaries are essential for preventing burnout.” 🧠✨

Also me: Adds 17 more things to my to-do list because apparently I enjoy collecting responsibilities like they’re Pokémon. 😂💅

The irony of being a therapist who teaches people to slow down while simultaneously juggling a private practice, teaching, research, writing books, and approximately 47 unfinished tasks. 🫠

But here’s the psychological takeaway:

Being high-functioning doesn’t mean you’re not overwhelmed.

Sometimes, the people who appear to have everything together are the very ones who struggle to give themselves permission to rest.

And sometimes, productivity becomes so intertwined with our identity that slowing down feels uncomfortable.

A reminder for me and anyone else who needs it:

✨ Your worth isn’t measured by your productivity.

✨ Rest doesn’t have to be earned.

✨ You can love what you do and still need a break.

And yes, therapists are human too. We’re allowed to be works in progress while helping others with theirs. 🩷

Now excuse me while I go practice the boundaries I keep teaching everyone else. 😂

Anyone else personally victimized by their own to-do list? 👀

Behind every degree, every late night, every research article, and every hour spent studying is a purpose much bigger than myself. 🧠🩷

Because being a therapist isn’t just about understanding theories or knowing the right interventions. It’s about recognizing the human being behind every diagnosis, every struggle, and every story.

And no matter how much I learn, I’ll never forget that people are more than what they’ve been through.

The learning never stops, and neither does the passion for helping others. 🥹✨

The goal was never just to earn the letters after my name. It was to make a difference in the lives behind the names. 🩷

Somewhere along the way, we started confusing being strong with having to handle everything alone. 🩷

But healing doesn’t always mean becoming more independent. Sometimes, it means learning that it’s safe to lean on others, ask for support, and allow yourself to be vulnerable.

You can be resilient and still need reassurance. You can be capable and still need help. And you can be healing while allowing others to walk alongside you.

You don’t have to carry everything just because you’ve learned how. ✨

Sometimes, strength looks like letting yourself be supported, too. 🫶

One of the interesting things about personal growth is realizing that not everyone will celebrate the version of you who starts setting boundaries. 🩷

Sometimes, when you stop people-pleasing, tolerating disrespect, or making yourself uncomfortable to keep others comfortable, certain relationships begin to change.

And from a psychological perspective, that makes sense.

Relationships develop patterns. When you’ve spent years accommodating others, avoiding conflict, or prioritizing everyone else’s feelings, people can become accustomed to that dynamic.

When you begin advocating for yourself, those patterns shift. And not everyone responds positively to change, especially when the previous dynamic benefited them.

But here’s something I’ve learned, both personally and professionally:

Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you stopped caring about people. It means you started including yourself in the equation.

And sometimes, the people who were comfortable with your lack of boundaries become uncomfortable when you finally establish them.

That doesn’t automatically make anyone a bad person. Relationships are complex, and sometimes people simply grow in different directions. But these changes can reveal which relationships have room for mutual respect, accountability, and growth.

And if someone chooses to stop speaking to you because you no longer accept behavior that compromises your well-being, you’re allowed to respect their decision without abandoning your own progress.

Because personal growth isn’t about convincing everyone to stay. Sometimes, it’s about learning that you can care about someone and still recognize that a particular relationship dynamic is no longer healthy for you.

Anyway…

If you think this post is about you…

Relax. 😂

I’m a therapist. I’m far too emotionally mature to use social media to address personal situations.

The side-eye is purely educational. 😏💅

🔐 “But what if my therapist tells someone?”

One of the biggest concerns people have about starting therapy is confidentiality. And understandably so. Being vulnerable with someone you barely know takes trust.

Here’s your reminder: Your story belongs to you. 🩷

Therapy is built on privacy, trust, and professional ethics. While confidentiality has important legal and safety-related exceptions, your therapist should explain those limits so you can make informed decisions about what you share.

You deserve to feel informed, respected, and supported. ✨

💬 Have questions about confidentiality? It’s okay to ask your therapist before sharing anything personal.

Unpopular opinion? Maybe. Clinically important? Absolutely. 🧠🩷

You cannot determine someone’s relationship with food, mental health, or overall well-being simply by looking at their body.

Weight, BMI, and clothing size may tell us something, but they certainly don’t tell us everything.

Eating disorders don’t have a particular look. Neither does recovery.

And perhaps it’s time we stopped treating someone’s appearance as a complete medical and psychological history.

Because people are far more complex than a number on a scale. ✨

💬 What’s one assumption about body image or eating disorders you wish more people would challenge?

Licensed therapist. PhD candidate. Professional overthinker. 😂🧠💕

Professionally trained to help others navigate life. Still figuring out how to consistently take all my own advice. 👀

Plot twist: Therapists are human, too!

We spend a lot of time helping others establish boundaries, regulate emotions, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and practice self-compassion.

And guess what? Understanding the psychology behind these things doesn’t magically make us immune to struggling with them ourselves.

Knowing the tools and consistently using them are two very different things.

I can teach emotional regulation and still have moments when I need to regulate my own emotions. I can encourage healthy boundaries and still have to remind myself to honor mine. I can talk about the importance of rest while occasionally needing a reminder that productivity isn’t a personality trait. 😂

Because being a therapist doesn’t mean having life figured out. It means being human while helping other humans navigate the beautifully complicated experience of being human.

And sometimes, the person who needs to hear my advice the most is… me. 😂

A little self-awareness, a lot of compassion, and the occasional cup of coffee. ☕️🩷

Anyone else really good at giving advice they occasionally need to hear themselves? 👀👇

Behind every session is a human being who genuinely cares. 🧠🩷

Some days are emotionally heavy, some are incredibly rewarding, and many are a little bit of both.

But being trusted with someone’s story? That’s a privilege I’ll never take lightly. ✨

To my fellow therapists, I hope you never forget the difference you can make, even on the days you feel exhausted. 💕

Food has nutritional value, cultural value, and emotional meaning. But moral value? That’s a different conversation. 🧠🩷

Your food choices don’t determine your worth. And someone else’s plate doesn’t need your judgment. ✨
