Day 27 of October National Down Syndrome Awareness Month! 💙💛

This month, we are celebrating people with Down syndrome by sharing our local individuals with Down syndrome every day this month with their stories. Help spread awareness, acceptance, and meaningful inclusion in schools and communities!

"A Few Words About Mitchell ❤️
Mitchell is a young man with a beautiful spirit. He is affectionate, generous, loving, and always eager to share his happiness with everyone around him. He loves to tap everyone wherever he goes and ask for a hug, even though sometimes people may not be quite as enthusiastic about his hugs as he is!

Music and dancing are among his greatest loves, and he is an absolute blast on the dance floor! Whether at a party or on a cruise, you will often see a number of women lining up to dance with him. He certainly knows how to have a good time!

Mitchell has a very special place in his heart for his faith. He prays fervently, looks forward to going to church and receiving the Blessed Sacrament, and one of his favorite pastimes is watching Mass on his tablet. His faith is an important part of his life and brings him great joy.

He also loves carrying a wallet. In fact, he has several! He is always asking us for a dollar or two, which he carefully saves to put in the church collection or to tip someone at a restaurant. Even in his own little way, Mitchell shows us how generous he can be.

He is becoming increasingly helpful around the house, too. After our meals, he clears the table and helps stack up the recyclables and garbage. It is wonderful to see him becoming more independent and taking pride in helping the family.

Mitchell loves to travel and have fun. He is always eager to know where we are going for our next vacation and looks forward to every new adventure. When it comes to food, his favorites are Costco hot dogs and snacks. And, oh boy, does he have a sweet tooth! There is always room for ice cream or a Snickers bar, no matter how much he has already eaten!

There is so much more I could say about this wonderful young man that I sometimes feel words cannot do him justice. One memory I will treasure forever is his very first word: “Happy!” He would repeat it over and over again — “Happy, Happy, Happy!” Those words seem to capture the very essence of Mitchell and the joy he brings into our lives.

Mitchell is loved by everyone who knows him. He has a unique way of touching hearts, spreading happiness, and making life brighter simply by being himself. Our lives would never be the same without him. He is a precious gift to our family, and we are blessed beyond words to have him in our lives.

Mitchell, keep smiling, dancing, praying, loving, and spreading your happiness wherever you go. You are loved more than words can ever express!" Merv De Sa

“I want to take a moment to celebrate my sweet 11-year-old daughter Chessie. She recently started sixth grade and absolutely loves going to school, seeing her friends, and learning new things. It makes me so happy to see how much she has grown, how independent she is becoming, and how much she continues to learn and thrive. Chessie is also an amazing big sister who loves helping out around the house and has a very sweet and caring heart.

If you’ve ever spent time with her, you know she has quite the personality! We call her cha-cha because she absolutely loves to sing and dance, and never misses a chance to put on a little show. She is silly, funny, caring, and always finding a way to make everyone around her laugh. Being her mom has taught me to appreciate the little things and celebrate every milestone; big or small. I couldn’t be prouder of the beautiful little lady she is becoming! 💙💛💙💛” Nina Gooch

"This is my daughter, Faith Natalia. She just turned 14. She brings so much heart, humor, and determination wherever she goes. She’s incredibly smart and fiercely motivated—when she sets her mind to something, she works hard to make it happen. She’s also wonderfully compassionate and empathetic, especially toward older people, babies, and animals.

She has a strong interest in medicine and caring for others, and I can imagine her becoming a nurse, a veterinarian, or perhaps even a police officer someday. She loves sports—especially basketball, but also soccer and volleyball—and makes friends easily with her warm personality and great sense of humor. She still cherishes her baby dolls, too, and brings all the sass and confidence of a typical 14-year-old teenager. I’m so proud of the kind, determined, and remarkable person she is." Amy Britton
