Sleep apnea treatment isn't one-size-fits-all—and myofunctional therapy isn't a replacement for medical care.
But for some adults, addressing tongue posture, nasal breathing and orofacial muscle function may be one useful piece of a broader treatment plan.
In this week's blog, we're looking at what the research says about myofunctional therapy and adult obstructive sleep apnea, where it may fit, and why a collaborative approach matters.

Where is your tongue right now?
Most of us don't think much about tongue posture unless we're eating, speaking, or swallowing. But what the tongue is doing at rest matters too.
Tongue posture is part of a larger functional system that includes nasal breathing, lip closure, swallowing, jaw and facial muscle function, and oral rest posture.
And when one part of that system isn't functioning optimally, we often see compensations elsewhere.
I break down why tongue posture matters—and why simply telling someone to “put your tongue on the roof of your mouth” isn't the whole answer—in my latest blog.

**15 Months.**

Most people notice the changes in my profile, my smile, and my facial balance.

What excites me most isn't what happened on the outside.

It's what happened behind it.

Swipe to see my airway before and after orthognathic surgery. >>>

The goal was never simply to change how I looked.

The goal was to create a structure that better supports breathing, tongue posture, sleep, function, and long-term health.

As a myofunctional therapist, I often explain that surgery changes anatomy—but it doesn't automatically change muscle patterns.

The tongue still needs a place to rest.

The lips still need to learn to stay together.

The muscles still need to adapt to a completely new foundation.

This is why I believe so strongly in the partnership between orthognathic surgery and myofunctional therapy.

One creates the space.

The other teaches the body how to use it.

Looking at these images reminds me of a lesson I learned through my own journey:

**When structure and function finally begin working together, everything changes.**

Questions about orthognathic surgery, airway health, or the role of myofunctional therapy before and after surgery? Drop them below or send me a message. I'd be happy to share what I've learned—both as a myofunctional therapist and as a patient.
