Ready to vote? The deadline to register in Oregon is TOMORROW, October 13.

In November, Oregon voters will elect leaders who make decisions that affect people with disabilities: a U.S. senator, six members of Congress, the governor, the labor commissioner, 15 state senators, 60 state representatives, and hundreds of local officeholders.

People with disabilities have the same right as everyone else to cast a private and independent ballot. But people with disabilities vote at lower rates than other people.

Make sure you’re registered, and check in with friends and family who might not be.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. πŸ’œ

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, people with disabilities are twice as likely as people without disabilities to experience crime. They also face major barriers to equal access to the criminal justice system and support services.

If you're a survivor of crime with a disability, you have a right to justice. You have a right to be treated with dignity and respect, to fair treatment throughout the criminal justice process, and to reasonable protection from the offender.

Disability Rights Oregon's Crime Survivor Know Your Rights guides can help you understand those rights, including:

πŸ“ Reporting crime to police
πŸ“ Privacy and the right to be present
πŸ“ Restitution and crime victims' compensation
πŸ“ Accommodations to access courts
πŸ“ Crime survivor rights in plain language

πŸš–β™Ώ Good news for Eugene! A new Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Pilot launched Oct. 1.

Anyone who uses a wheelchair or power chair can now book an accessible taxi, any time of day, for rides within Eugene's urban growth boundary and to and from the Eugene Airport. Riders pay a standard fare, and the City subsidizes it. Taxis can fit up to two wheelchair users, service dogs, and up to three other passengers.

πŸ“ž Book by calling 541-345-1234 or using the Direct Medical Transport app.

The pilot runs through September 2027, and rider feedback will help the City decide whether to continue it, so if you use the service, share your experience.

We're proud to have represented Tina Argetsinger in her landmark disability rights case against Regal Cinemas.

In 1998, Tina and her mother were turned away from equal seating at a new movie theater β€” wheelchair users were relegated to the concrete floor right beneath the screen. That experience launched a five-year legal battle that went to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, ultimately forcing Regal to redesign over 1,000 auditoriums nationwide.

Tina recently shared the full story of that fight, from the first news interview to the courtroom to returning to that same theater decades later. It's a story about persistence, and about what it really takes to make "equal access" a reality rather than just a phrase in a law.

πŸ‘‰ Read her story here:

In 1998, a brand-new multiplex banished wheelchair users to the front row. Here is the five-year fight that forced an entire industry to redesign.
