FREE- Basic Conflict De-escalation Training
Saturday, October 3, 2026 | 1:00–4:00 PM
Multnomah Friends Meeting House
4312 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97215
Join the Portland Peace Team for a Basic Conflict De-escalation Training based on the CLARA method: Calm • Listen • Affirm • Respond • Add Information
CLARA is used around the world by a wide variety of peacekeeping organizations, including the Mobile Peace Team, Nonviolent Peaceforce, and American Friends Service Committee.
Why do you take de-escalation training? You can benefit from knowing about the CLARA technique to use in your own lives. It may help you understand that it is not about they or them but is about the WE and how we can live with one another without violence. You may be inspired to join us in a volunteer position (social media, website maintenance, on the street volunteer). Or to just see that there is more to what you see on the WEB/Internet when it comes to violence in the streets, and who is helping to make a difference.
How to Prepare for the Training We recommend watching this short 11-minute, 26-second video, Finding Confidence in Conflict by Kwame Christian, before the training: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6Zg65eK9XU
Put Your Skills into Action It is our hope that those who attend will consider volunteering with a local peacekeeping organization, such as the Portland Peace Team, and put their new skills to active use to help make our world a better place.

Who is the Portland Peace Team? We are a non-profit dedicated to helping keep peace at non-violent events to which we are invited.
We are trained in de-escalation, prioritizing respect and safety for ourselves and our team. We are non-partisan and function to de-escalate protesters regardless of political stance.
Many of us have been working in this capacity for decades and continue to believe in peaceful de-escalation and resolution.
Some of the types of events we have been invited to include memorials, funerals, LGTBQI events, fundraisers, parades, or any event where organizers are concerned about potential demonstrations or stress.
** We welcome new volunteers.
