âBut I have proof. How can the judge not see what heâs doing?â
I hear this all the time from people divorcing someone whoâs used coercive control for years.
They have the texts, the emails, the financial records. Theyâve spent thousands on attorneys, and theyâre waiting for the judge to finally see their ex for who they really are.
I get it. I really do.
But family court makes decisions about finances, parenting, assets, and support. Itâs not designed to give you the kind of justice youâre hoping for.
Take the ex who refuses to return your kidâs sports equipment for the 80th time.
You know itâs not about the damn equipment.
Itâs another excuse to contact you, make you angry, question your reality, or pull you into another argument. And when you react, suddenly YOUâRE the problem.
Of course you want someone to see that.
But the judge canât show up at your exâs house and make them pack the soccer cleats.
And please donât mistake what Iâm saying for âjust let it go.â
I absolutely despise that advice, especially when someone is recovering from coercive control.
Iâm talking about finding another way that doesnât cost you another thousand dollars, another sleepless night, or another day consumed by your ex.
So hereâs something I often ask clients.
What would justice look like if it didnât depend on your ex finally being exposed?
Maybe itâs making decisions without fearing their reaction. Enjoying your kidâs game instead of watching your ex. Having money you can access without answering to anyone.
There are absolutely things worth fighting for in court.
But I donât want you spending another five years waiting for your ex to get whatâs coming to them.
Thereâs a whole lot of life you deserve to enjoy in the meantime.
Even if they never admit to a damn thing. **at
