Sometimes healing is a process of reclaiming parts of ourselves that once needed to retreat from the world.

Some shamanic traditions hold the understanding that overwhelming life experiences can cause aspects of our vital essence to become separated or inaccessible, sometimes described as soul loss.

The healing practice of soul retrieval is about calling those lost or hidden aspects home.

BodyMind Bridge carries a similar reverence for the parts of ourselves that may have become quiet, distant, or hidden when it wasn't safe or possible for them to be fully expressed.

The sensitive one.
The creative one.
The one who knew what she needed.
The one who had a voice.
The playful one.
The fierce one.
The one who knew when to say no.

These parts carry wisdom, strength, creativity, instinct, and aliveness.

And in BodyMind Bridge, you are an active participant in the reclamation. With support and your own inner resources, you can turn toward that part that was protected, enter into relationship with it, listen to what it knows, and gently invite more of yourself home.

Sometimes healing is the sacred work of reclaiming more of who you have always been.

What does nervous system dysregulation actually look like?

Sometimes it looks like anxiety, irritability, restlessness, or feeling constantly on edge.

Sometimes it looks like exhaustion, shutting down, difficulty concentrating, or feeling like everything is just too much.

And sometimes it shows up in the body through muscle tension, headaches, digestive changes, disrupted sleep, appetite changes, or increased sensitivity to noise, stimulation, and the emotions of people around you.

Essentially, your nervous system may be having difficulty returning to equilibrium after stress.

And modern life gives us plenty of stress without giving us natural opportunities to recover.

So how can we intentionally support our nervous systems?

Slow your breathing or allow yourself a good sigh.
Move your body in ways that feel good.
Spend time outside.
Connect with people who nourish you.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Hug someone you love.
Create, journal, make art, or use your imagination.
Take breaks from screens and stimulation.
Rest. Play. Build community.
Notice what helps your body feel more settled, present, and alive.

What will you do today to give your nervous system a moment to reset?

RECLAMATION

Different traditions have different ways of talking about the parts of ourselves that can become disconnected, hidden, or pushed away.

Personal development circles may talk about Inner Child Work.

Therapeutic communities may use words like dissociation, fragmentation, and integration.

Shamanic traditions may speak of Soul Loss and Soul Retrieval.

In BodyMind Bridge, we explore this as a process of healing and reclamation.

Because what was tucked away can be powerful parts of you:

The knowers.
The feelers.
The truth-tellers.
The instinctive ones.
The parts that carry your creativity, your voice, your boundaries, your aliveness.

Parts of yourself that may have learned it was safer to become quiet, small, distant, or hidden.

But perhaps it is time to turn toward what was once protected and gently invite more of yourself home.

Reclamation is the remembering that all of you belongs to you.

For much of human history, daily life was more closely connected to natural rhythms. Light and darkness shaped activity and rest. Physical movement was part of everyday life. People spent more time outdoors and in community.

Modern life looks very different.

We wake to alarms, follow schedules that may have little to do with our body's rhythms, move from one demand to another, absorb a constant stream of information, and remain reachable through our phones long after the workday is over.

The hits just keep coming.

Our bodies still need opportunities to recover from activation, but modern life doesn't always provide them.

That means we MUST create those moments intentionally.

A few slower breaths.
Feeling your feet on the ground.
Looking away from your screen and noticing the world around you.
Stretching or moving your body.
Pausing long enough to notice what you're actually feeling inside.

In a society that rarely pauses for you, you have to create the restorative pause for yourself.

Regulating your nervous isn't only about handling stress better.

It's also necessary so we are present for the good stuff.

So here's a different kind of nervous system practice:

When something feels good, pause.

Notice it.

Give yourself a few extra moments to actually be there for it.

Because resilience isn't only about our capacity to move through what's difficult.

It's also about our capacity to be present for joy, connection, and the life we're working to build.

You don't need a complicated breathing practice to give your nervous system a little support.

Try this:

Notice your breath exactly as it is.

Then, if it feels comfortable, allow your next exhale to be just a little longer than your inhale.

Let the next breath arrive on its own.

And again, an easy inhale followed by a slightly longer exhale.

That's it.

A few intentional breaths can become a small reset you can use almost anywhere.

When life gets busy, how much of your attention is actually inside you?

For just a moment, stop following everything that wants your attention
- the notifications
- the to-do list
- the thing you need to remember

Bring your awareness back inside your body.

Feel yourself from the inside.

Notice your breath, your body, the space you occupy within your own skin.

No analyzing.
Nothing to figure out.
Just gathering your awareness.
Sometimes your nervous system just needs you to come home to yourself.

One of the things I love most about facilitating BodyMind Bridge sessions is witnessing the moment someone connects with their own wisdom.

There is something deeply moving about watching a woman trust herself a little more.

To hear her own truth.
To reclaim her voice.
To remember the strength and wisdom already within her.
