š¦ Okay⦠is it just us, or are the mosquitoes especially RUDE lately? If youāve been outside for approximately 37 seconds and somehow came back with five new bites, hereās your reminder that most mosquito bites are annoying, itchy and harmless. But there are a few things worth keeping an eye on.
-
For the everyday itchy bite:
š§¼ Wash it with soap + water
š§ Use a cold pack for about 10 minutes for swelling and itch
š
Try your best not to scratch (we knowā¦)
š§“ An OTC anti-itch or antihistamine cream may help. Follow the label directions.
-
Give that bite a closer look if:
š The redness keeps spreading instead of settling down
š„ The area becomes increasingly warm, painful or swollen
š© You notice red streaking coming away from the bite
š¤ You develop fever or start feeling generally unwell
-
And one more thing: mosquitoes can carry illnesses such as West Nile virus. Most people infected with West Nile never develop symptoms, but fever with headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea or a rash can occur.
-
High fever, neck stiffness, confusion, tremors or muscle weakness are reasons to seek medical attention right away.
-
Basically: itchy little bump? Probably typical mosquito nonsense.
Bite getting angrier instead of better, or youāre feeling sick along with it? That deserves a second look. š¦š
-
āļøAnd while the mosquitoes are apparently thriving, prevention still counts: repellent, long loose-fitting clothing when practical, and getting rid of standing water around the house can help cut down on bites.
-
Stay safe out there. Apparently weāre all on the mosquito menu right now. š
