LET’S TALK ABOUT EPIDURALS WITHOUT THE MOMMY WARS. 🤰🏼💉

An epidural is one of the most effective forms of pain relief available during labor — but just like any medical intervention, it has benefits, risks, and tradeoffs.

💉 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

An epidural can provide significant pain relief and may allow you to:

✨ Rest during a long labor
✨ Conserve energy for pushing
✨ Reduce severe pain and anxiety
✨ Stay awake and present for your baby’s birth while having strong pain relief

⚠️ WHAT ARE THE RISKS & TRADEOFFS?

Possible side effects and complications include:

• A drop in blood pressure
• Itching or nausea
• Temporary numbness or weakness in the legs
• Difficulty urinating, which may require a catheter
• Fever
• Incomplete or one-sided pain relief
• A headache from an accidental dural puncture — uncommon
• Infection, bleeding around the spine, or nerve injury — very rare

An epidural can also mean less freedom to move around, and you’ll typically need additional monitoring while it’s in place.

BUT HERE’S WHAT I REALLY WANT YOU TO HEAR:

Getting an epidural does NOT mean you failed.

And choosing not to have one doesn’t make you stronger or “better.”

Pain medication is a tool.

Movement is a tool.

Water is a tool.

Breathing is a tool.

Massage is a tool.

And an epidural is a tool.

You don’t have to decide that you’re “never getting an epidural.”

You can make a plan for an unmedicated birth while also deciding:

“If I reach a point where I want or need an epidural, I will consider it.”

Birth is not a test of how much pain you can tolerate.

Know your options. Understand the risks and benefits. And make the decision that’s right for YOU. ❤️

💬 If you’ve had an epidural, what’s one thing you wish someone had told you beforehand

CAN YOU ACTUALLY MAKE LABOR SHORTER?

I wish there were a magic button. 😂 There isn’t.

But there ARE things that may support your body during labor.

Movement ✔️
Changing positions ✔️
Hydration ✔️
Rest when you need it ✔️
Feeling safe and supported ✔️
Emptying your bladder ✔️
Using comfort measures ✔️
Working with your care team ✔️

But please be skeptical of anyone promising:

“DO THIS AND YOUR LABOR WILL ONLY BE 4 HOURS.”

Labor length varies enormously.

Your body isn’t a stopwatch.

And a longer labor doesn’t mean you did anything wrong.

💬 What’s the craziest “shorten your labor” tip you’ve heard?

“I’M BEING INDUCED. WHAT DOES THAT ACTUALLY MEAN?”

An induction means your care team is using medications and/or procedures to start labor rather than waiting for spontaneous labor.

Depending on your situation, induction can involve:

• Cervical ripening
• Medication to help contractions
• Breaking your water
• Oxytocin

But here’s the most important part:

An induction isn’t one single procedure.

Your experience can look completely different depending on how ready your cervix is, why you’re being induced, your baby’s position, and how your body responds.

If induction has been recommended to you, ask:

“Why are you recommending it?”

“What are the benefits of doing it now?”

“What are the risks of waiting?”

“What are my alternatives?”

Informed consent means understanding your options — not blindly saying yes OR no.

WHAT DOES “NATURAL BIRTH” ACTUALLY MEAN? 🤰🏼

You hear the term natural birth ALL the time, but what does it actually mean?

Typically, when someone says they’re planning a natural birth, they mean they want to give birth without medication for pain relief or other medical interventions intended to manage labor, allowing labor to progress and birth to happen without those interventions whenever it is safe to do so.

And here’s an important distinction:

🏡 Natural birth does NOT automatically mean home birth.

You can have an unmedicated, natural birth at home, in a birth center, OR in a hospital.

For example, a mom can have a hospital birth, use the shower, birth ball, movement, breathing, massage, counterpressure, and other comfort measures — and give birth without an epidural or other pain medication.

On the other hand, someone can plan a home birth and still need a transfer to the hospital or medical intervention if circumstances change.

And this is where I think birth conversations get unnecessarily divisive.

Natural birth isn’t “better.”

An unmedicated birth can be an incredible experience.

An epidural can be an incredible tool.

An induction can be medically appropriate.

A cesarean can be lifesaving.

The goal isn’t to prove how “natural” you can be.

The goal is to understand your options, know what matters to you, and make informed decisions throughout your birth.

You can want an unmedicated birth AND still want access to medical care.

Those things aren’t contradictory. ❤️

💬 When you hear “natural birth,” what does it mean to YOU?

“AM I GOING TO TEAR?”

This is one of the BIGGEST fears I hear from first-time moms.

And the honest answer?

You can’t predict it perfectly.

Tearing can happen for many reasons, including baby’s size and position, how quickly the tissues stretch, and whether an instrumental delivery is needed.

Some things may help reduce the risk of more severe tearing, such as:

• Different pushing positions
• Controlled pushing when appropriate
• Warm compresses during pushing
• Perineal support/massage in some circumstances

But even if you do everything “right,” tearing can still happen.

And if it does?

You didn’t fail.

Your body didn’t fail.

Birth isn’t a test you pass or fail based on whether your perineum stays intact.

WANT TO MAKE LABOR MORE MANAGEABLE? START HERE.

You can’t guarantee a painless birth.

But you CAN prepare tools that may help you cope with labor.

Try:

🌀 Change positions frequently
🚿 Warm shower or bath
🎾 Counterpressure on your lower back
🫁 Slow, relaxed breathing
🤲 Massage
⚽ Birth ball movement
🌙 Dim lights and a calm environment
🧘 Relax your jaw, shoulders, hands and pelvic floor
❤️ Have someone you trust supporting you

And don’t underestimate feeling safe.

When you’re scared and tense, labor can feel very different than when you’re supported, informed, and able to relax.

And if you want medication?

That’s a tool too.

There is no prize for making birth harder than it needs to be.

💾 Save this for your birth prep!

THE 3 QUESTIONS I GET ASKED ALL THE TIME ABOUT BIRTH 👇🏼🤰🏼

If you’re pregnant, you’ve probably wondered at least ONE of these…

1️⃣ “HOW WILL I KNOW I’M ACTUALLY IN LABOR?”

Not every contraction means labor is starting!

True labor contractions generally become stronger, longer, and closer together and don’t simply disappear when you rest or change positions.

But everyone’s labor can look different — so when in doubt, call your provider.

2️⃣ “HOW DO I MAKE LABOR HURT LESS?”

You have SO many tools available to you.

Movement, position changes, water, massage, counterpressure, breathing, a birth ball, a peanut ball, nitrous oxide, IV medications, an epidural, and more can all be part of your toolbox depending on your birth setting and circumstances.

And here’s something I want every mom to hear:

You don’t get extra credit for suffering.

Using pain relief doesn’t mean you failed. ❤️

3️⃣ “WHAT IF MY BIRTH DOESN’T GO ACCORDING TO PLAN?”

This is probably one of the biggest fears I hear.

Here’s the truth:

You can prepare for birth without trying to control every detail of it.

Learn your options.
Ask questions.
Know your preferences.
Choose supportive people.
Understand possible interventions.
And have a plan for when things change.

A birth plan isn’t about guaranteeing a specific birth.

It’s about making sure your voice is heard throughout your birth.

BIRTH BALL vs. PEANUT BALL — WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? 🤰🏼⚽️🥜

You see both of these in birth rooms all the time… but what are they actually for?

⚽️ BIRTH BALL

Think: sitting, bouncing, rocking, and making big hip circles.

A birth ball can help you:

✨ Stay upright and mobile
✨ Change positions
✨ Move your pelvis
✨ Take pressure off your back
✨ Find more comfortable positions during contractions

It can be especially useful when you’re able to sit or stand and move freely.

🥜 PEANUT BALL

This one is especially helpful if you’re laboring in bed, including when you have an epidural and mobility is more limited.

You can place it between your legs while lying on your side or use different positions to help maintain an open, supported posture.

Think:

Birth ball = movement + upright positions

Peanut ball = positioning + support in bed

And here’s the important part:

Neither one is a magic “make labor faster” tool.

They’re simply tools in your toolbox that may help you find comfortable positions and support your labor.

💾 SAVE THIS so you remember which is which!

And send this to your birth partner — because they’re going to be the ones Googling “HOW DO I USE THIS PEANUT THING?!” at 2 AM. 😂

WHY DO WOMEN SHAKE DURING LABOR? 🥶

If you suddenly start shaking, trembling, or your teeth start chattering during labor…

YOU ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG.

Shaking or trembling during labor is actually pretty common, especially during transition, although it can happen at other points too.

It can happen because of:

🌀 Rapid hormonal changes
🌀 Adrenaline
🌀 The intensity of labor
🌀 Your body’s response to pain and stress
🌀 Changes in temperature
🌀 Medication or anesthesia

And here’s the part I really want you to know:

You can be completely healthy and have a normal labor while shaking.

You might feel freezing even though the room is warm. You might shake so hard your whole bed moves. You might even wonder, “Why can’t I control my body?!”

Your body may simply be responding to the intensity of what’s happening.

Your partner might be able to help with warm blankets, a calm voice, hydration if permitted, and reassurance.

BUT — shaking shouldn’t automatically be assumed to be “just labor.” If it’s accompanied by a fever, feeling very unwell, confusion, severe symptoms, or anything else concerning, your birth team should know so they can assess you.

So if you’re preparing for birth, remember:

Shaking doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.

Sometimes it means your body is working HARD. ❤️

💬 Did you know shaking during labor was a thing before having your first baby?

“WHAT IF MY BABY GETS STUCK?”

This is one of those birth fears that can keep moms awake at night.

One situation your providers prepare for is shoulder dystocia, when the baby’s shoulders don’t deliver as expected after the head. This is not common, but it can happen. If it happens, your birth team may use specific maneuvers and change your position to help deliver the baby’s shoulders.

Here’s what I want you to remember: You cannot completely prevent every complication of birth. You can control the birth stories you listen to while pregnant!

That’s why choosing a birth setting and the right team also means considering:

➡️ Who will be attending your birth?
➡️ What training do they have?
➡️ What emergency equipment is available?
➡️ How quickly can you transfer if needed?

Birth education isn’t about eliminating fear.

It’s about replacing “What if?!” with “I know what happens next.” 💚
