I grew up in Eastern Washington and Idaho, spending most of my childhood on the Palouse. While studying for my Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, my love of science combined with experiences serving people in inner-city Detroit, Guatemala, and a primary care clinic in Moscow directed me towards the field of nursing. With a great foundation in microbiology, physiology, and molecular biology from my first degree, I went on to pursue a Nursing degree from University of Washington and graduated in 2005. Over the next 10 years, I worked as a hospital nurse, taking care of patients in Oncology, Adult medical, Respiratory, and Pre-liver transplant. Those years provided countless interesting and challenging experiences where I was blessed to hone the skills of high-touch, love-centered, quality care.
My midwifery journey began in a different way. I was born in a little cabin on the shore of Newman Lake, Washington and grew up hearing stories of my birth and the home births of my two brothers. In college, I heard Ina May Gaskin speak as a guest lecturer at my university. Her midwifery stories, combined with my mother's, sparked an interest and love for midwifery care that stayed with me through my years working as a nurse. For as long as I can remember, I have loved the way midwifery care gives women a voice and empowers them in such a transformative area of life.
With a huge variety of nursing experiences under my belt, the right time arrived to follow the dream of becoming a midwife. I earned a Masters degree in Nurse-Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University in 2015. My first baby was born at home with a midwife halfway through my midwifery training, and I got to live through many of the things I was learning in class while it was happening in real time! Since then, I have been blessed to gain experience working as a hospital midwife for UW Medicine in Seattle, and as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner at a women’s clinic. Along the way, I had three more of my own babies who brought me a variety of personal experiences in pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, parenting, and all the personal growth that comes along with those.
In this new season, I’m excited to come alongside the amazing midwives at The Nest; to learn, serve, teach, and join in the joy of new life!
