Today marks one year since we almost lost my dad.
One year ago today was a normal day, until it wasnāt. My dad fell and suffered a massive brain bleed. He needed a craniotomy, and for a while - weeks actually, we truly didnāt know if he was going to survive.
My last conversation with him before his fall didnāt end the way I would have wanted. I just prayed Iād get another chance to tell him I loved him.
I got that chance.
And then, somehow, we got so much more.
As siblings, we had two goals while Dad was in the hospital:
1. Get him home to his house.
and
2. Get him to his 80th birthday in January.
He made it home. He turned 80. šš»š
And then we got something we never knew weād need so badly: a year of healing.
Dad told jokes & laughed. Really laughed with us! He told us stories from his past, had great conversations with us, sat around the dinner table, and played cards with us.
There were moments of just⦠peace.
This season of life is hard in ways I never really understood before. Caring for your parents as the roles begin to shift can be complicated, exhausting, heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time.
There are still hard moments. We take it day by day and love him, care for him, and do what we believe is best for him.
Around Thanksgiving, when Dad had just come home after 11 weeks in the hospital, a patient squeezed my hand and said something Iāve never forgotten:
āThis is bonus time.ā
And now, here we are.
One whole year later.
One whole year of bonus time.
I donāt know what the future holds, but I donāt want to miss what weāve been given by worrying about what comes next.
So today, Iām just grateful.
Grateful I got to tell my dad I love him.
Grateful he survived.
Grateful he made it home.
Grateful he made it to 80.
Grateful for this year.
Grateful for the healing.
One year.
One whole year of bonus time. š¤
