Well… this stopped me in my tracks tonight. 😳🌿
I found photos of my first Bare Root Apothecary in Coeur d’Alene—the before, the after, and everything we created there.
Then I found photos of the building that is now home to my little forest apothecary in Rathdrum…
from only FIVE MONTHS AGO.
And damn.
I realized I wasn’t just looking at the evolution of Bare Root.
I was looking at the evolution of me.
Our Coeur d’Alene apothecary was actually much bigger. We downsized when we moved to Rathdrum.
Less square footage… but somehow more of everything that matters.
More community. More connection. More purpose. More love.
And maybe most importantly…
more me.
The woman who opened that first apothecary and the woman standing behind the counter today are the same woman.
I just know her better now.
I used to wonder what an herbalist was supposed to look like. What an apothecary was supposed to be. How much of me I should put into it.
Eventually, I stopped asking.
And somewhere along the way, I stopped trying to make myself fit, too.
The wild woman came forward.
The bow hunter. The forager. The plant nerd. The woman who loves bones and antlers, snakes and poisonous plants, mushrooms, roots, muddy boots and wild places.
The Outlaw Herbalist.
She isn’t new.
She’s always been here.
I’ve just become a hell of a lot more comfortable letting her take up space.
And Bare Root evolved right alongside me.
Five months ago, this was an empty building.
Today it’s herbs hanging overhead, jars lining the shelves, warm amber light, wood, plants, bones, antlers, roots, mushrooms and a snake winding through the tree.
My little forest.
It’s smaller than where we came from, but somehow everything around it has grown bigger.
Including me.
Maybe evolution isn’t about becoming someone new.
Maybe it’s about becoming more unmistakably yourself.
Still wild.
Still learning.
Still a little outlaw.
Still completely me.
And apparently, when this wild woman finally gave herself enough room to grow…
she grew herself a whole forest. 🌿🐍
Return to the Roots.
