Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy has been hospitalized after experiencing a stroke and is expected to make a full recovery, his team announced Sunday.

The 53-year-old experienced “numbness in his arm” on Saturday afternoon and was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he suffered a stroke, according to a statement from his office.

Stroke is among the top causes of death in the United States. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity and diabetes are leading causes of stroke, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms can include trouble speaking or understanding others; numbness, weakness or paralysis in the face, arm or leg; problems seeing with one or both eyes; headache; and trouble walking.

Stroke rehabilitation has advanced dramatically in the past 25 years. Modern rehabilitation focuses on matching therapies to each patient’s specific recovery needs.

When a stroke damages the neural circuits that govern movement, the signals that once flowed from brain to muscle at full strength through thousands of fibers are suddenly diminished, rerouted and degraded. The goal of modern rehab is to amplify whatever signal remains — stimulating the nervous system along the injured pathway or pushing the brain to find alternative routes. At the same time, coupling that stimulation to the intense, repetitive, task-specific practice that drives the reforming of brain networks.

Devices such as vagus nerve stimulation implants and wearable technologies are expanding options for individualized recovery after stroke.

People who survive a stroke while living with atrial fibrillation face a high risk of a second one. A study published in the journal Neurology on October 21 found that patients whose normal heart rhythm was restored within eight weeks of their stroke were less likely to be hospitalized again for a stroke or a blood clot elsewhere in the body over five years.

The findings matter to adult children and spouses, who often help make treatment decisions for an older relative after a stroke. AFib causes about 1 in 7 strokes, and those strokes tend to be more severe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC estimates 12.1 million people in the United States will have AFib by 2050.

Young adult stroke rates are rising — and more survivors are living with lasting effects. Stroke is usually thought of as something that happens to older people. But new research from the University of Cincinnati suggests that more young people are having strokes, surviving and living with the long-term effects.

Strokes among adults ages 20 to 54 nearly doubled over almost three decades, even as short-term survival after stroke improved, UC research suggests.

High blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation and substance use increased among younger adults who had a stroke, the data showed. Substance use among younger adults with stroke increased from 4.6% in 1993-1994 to 40.2% in 2020, with much of the increase reflecting ma*****na use.

When it comes to stroke prevention, you're probably aware of the usual risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking. But new research suggests their may be more warning signals that fly under the radar. The findings point to three physical markers that may predict stroke risk long before traditional symptoms appear.

Walking Pace: Of the three markers, walking pace showed the strongest association with stroke risk. Participants who reported a slow walking pace had a 64% higher risk of stroke compared to those who reported a brisk walking pace.

Grip strength: For every 5 kg decrease in grip strength (which is equivalent to approximately 11 lbs), stroke risk increased by 7%.

Muscle mass: Participants with probable sarcopenia, a condition characterized by low muscle mass and reduced physical function, had a 30% higher risk of stroke compared to those without it.
