2 types of belly fat! Which one are you trying to manage?

In a calorie deficit your body pulls energy from fat and from muscle. You do not get to choose the ratio directly, but two inputs heavily influence it: how much protein you eat, and whether you are giving your muscles a reason to stick around.
Get those right and most of what you lose is fat.
Get them wrong and you give up muscle, which is exactly why the weight comes back more easily the next time. Muscle is where you store glucose. It is what keeps you steady on your feet at seventy. It is the difference between losing weight once and keeping it off.
Clinical guidance puts protein needs meaningfully higher during active weight loss than the general baseline, and the right number depends on your body and your program.

Comment PROTEIN and we will walk you through how we set yours.

The fat you can grab is not the fat that is hurting you.
Subcutaneous fat sits under the skin and is largely a cosmetic issue. Visceral fat sits deeper, around the liver, pancreas and intestines, and it is the one tied to insulin resistance, blood pressure and cardiovascular risk.
Good news buried in that: visceral fat tends to respond first. It is often the earliest fat to move when nutrition and activity change, which is why people feel better before they look different.
So if your waistband is looser but the scale is stuck, do not quit. That is the good version of this.
We measure this at every visit, not just weight.

Every GLP-1 has a clearly defined on-ramp. Almost none of them come with an off-ramp. That gap is where the regain lives.
What a real maintenance plan includes:
1. Lean muscle built before you taper, not after
2. A protein habit established while appetite is still suppressed and it is easy
3. Resistance training two to three times a week, the intervention with the strongest evidence for holding lean mass
4. A gradual taper under supervision rather than a hard stop
5. Monitoring that continues past the last dose, because the first six months off is exactly when regain begins and exactly when most people stop being seen by anyone
None of this is anti-medication. These drugs work. This is about the part nobody plans for.
Save this and send it to whoever is on one.

Most weeks do not fall apart from lack of willpower. They fall apart because you are making decisions at six in the evening when you have nothing left.
Three decisions on Sunday:
1. What is my protein this week. Buy it. That is the whole task, not a meal plan.
2. Workouts go in the calendar with a start time. Anything without a time does not happen.
3. Name the one meal you already know will be hard. Decide what you are ordering now, while it costs you nothing.
Three decisions today instead of thirty decisions tired.
Send this to whoever you are doing this with.

The most important GLP-1 question is not about the starting dose. It is about the ending.
A BMJ meta-analysis found people who stop regain roughly four times faster than people who lost weight through a behavior-based program, back to baseline in about a year and a half.
That is not a reason to avoid the medication. Plenty of people should be on it.
It is a reason to build something underneath it while you are on it. Lean muscle. Protein habits. Structure that does not depend on a weekly shot.
Most people are handed a prescription and no exit plan. That gap is where the regain lives.
Comment OFFRAMP and we will send you the five things a maintenance plan should include.

The scale is the least useful tool in the room and it is the one everybody owns.
It gives you one number that blends muscle, water, bone and whatever you ate last night, then asks you to build your whole mood around it.
Two people at the same weight can have completely different metabolic risk. What separates them is lean muscle, where the body stores fat, and what the waist is doing over months.
That is what we measure at Reno Weight Loss. Not just pounds.
Save this for the next morning the scale ruins your day.
