Essiac Tea Video Essiac tea originated in Canada in the 1920s, popularized by a Canadian nurse named Rene Caisse ("Essiac" is her last name spelled backward).

The Origin Story

• The Ojibwa Legend: According to Caisse, she learned the herbal recipe from an English miner's wife. The woman claimed an Ojibwa medicine man in Northern Ontario had given her the formula, which she used to recover from breast cancer.
• Historical Skepticism: Historians and researchers note that Caisse changed her story multiple times. Furthermore, of the core traditional herbs, only slippery elm is native to North America, casting doubt on whether the exact blend was a traditional First Nations remedy.

The Formula

• Original 4-Herb Blend: Burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm inner bark, and Indian (or Turkish) rhubarb root.
• Later 8-Herb Blend: Caisse later worked with physician Dr. Charles Brusch to expand the recipe to include four additional herbs (watercress, blessed thistle, red clover, and kelp)
