It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I share with yall that two days ago, on October 5th I had to say goodbye to my baby boy Atlas and send him over the rainbow bridge.
Many of you will know that the vet diagnosed him with hip dysplasia in April but unfortunately that was only the surface of the issues he was facing in his sweet little body. He also had elbow dysplasia, possible irritable bowel syndrome, skin allergies, arthritis, and the urgent issue that made it so necessary to say goodbye, femoral head necrosis.
There were so many weird little quirks about him that I recognize now as a reaction to pain. He probably spent the majority of his life hurting in one way or another. Hurting physically, but also hurting mentally for all the things he wanted to do but couldn’t.
If there had been anything we could have done to ease his suffering and extend his life, I would have done it. This isn’t about the money, it’s about the pain. All four of his legs needed some sort of surgery which means none of them were strong enough to hold his weight through the grueling recovery process of a hip replacement, which would have been the first thing that needed to be done.
I know he’s free now. Free of the pain he existed with in his body. Free to chase the ghost squirrels and kitties. Free to protect his own personal yard in the ethereal plane. Free to sleep all the way through the night without howling in pain while his bones die inside of him.
I’m so grateful that I got to know him and spend his entire life with him. He was such a sweetheart with so much love to give and I feel absolutely blessed that I got to experience that.
Please keep him in your thoughts, but also, Basanti. She’s now lost a husband and a child.
