Fall is in the air! 🍂🍁 It’s the perfect season to explore new vocabulary and model words during everyday autumn activities.

When introducing seasonal words on an AAC device, remember to balance high-frequency core words (which can be used across many contexts) with seasonal fringe words (specific nouns)!

Here are core & fringe words to model this fall:

🍂 Core Words (Use anywhere!):
1️⃣ Look / See — "Look at the leaf!" or "I see orange."

2️⃣ Like / Don't Like — "I like pumpkin pie!" or "I don't like cold wind."

3️⃣ In / Out — "Get in the hayride" or "Take seeds out of the pumpkin."

4️⃣ Up / Down — "Leaves fall down" or "Pick the apple up."

5️⃣ More / Stop — "Want more c***r?" or "Stop jumping in leaves."

🎃 Fall Fringe Words (Seasonal specifics):

Leaf / Leaves 🍁

Pumpkin 🎃

Apple 🍎

Cold / Wind 💨

Sweater / Jacket 🧥

💡 AAC Partner Tip: Don't worry about targeting every word at once! Pick 1–2 target words during a fall activity—like crunching through leaves or picking apples—and model them as you play and chat.

Communication isn't a one-way street—it takes two to connect! Whether using high-tech speech-generating devices, communication boards, or gestures, every AAC user deserves a supportive, patient partner.

Here are 5 ways you can be a great AAC communication partner:

1️⃣ Give Wait Time ⏳

Formulating thoughts and navigating a device takes time. Count to 10 in your head before jumping in. Patience opens up the conversation!

2️⃣ Model Without Expectation (Aided Language Input) 📲

Point to symbols on the device as you speak to show how it can be used. Don't force them to "say it back"—just show them it's a natural tool for sharing ideas.

3️⃣ Acknowledge ALL Communication Methods 🗣️

AAC isn't just a high-tech screen. Eye contact, body language, facial expressions, gestures, and sounds are all valid forms of communication. Honor them all!

4️⃣ Respect Autonomy 🤝

Never force device use or grab someone’s hands to select icons. Respect their right to communicate what they want, when they want, or choose not to communicate at all.

5️⃣ Keep It Accessible ♿

Ensure the communication device or board is always within reach and ready to use, wherever they go throughout the day.

Communication isn't just about making requests; it's about forming genuine relationships between students and educators." 💬✨

When we focus only on teaching students how to ask for things, we miss out on the true heart of communication: connection. Communication gives students a voice to share ideas, crack jokes, tell us how their day went, express feelings, and build real, meaningful bonds with the educators around them.

Let’s model more than just "I want." Let's model connection, conversation, and community! 💙

When it comes to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), presuming competence changes everything! 💡

Believing in a communicator's potential is the very first step toward unlocking robust, effective communication. Let’s break down a few common myths and uncover the facts about AAC:

❌ MYTH: AAC stops a child from developing verbal speech.
✅ FACT: Research shows that AAC actually supports and often increases verbal speech development!

❌ MYTH: Individuals must prove "readiness" (like understanding cause-and-effect) before getting an AAC system.
✅ FACT: Communication is a human right. There are no prerequisite skills required to start using AAC.

❌ MYTH: AAC is only for non-speaking individuals.
✅ FACT: AAC is beneficial for anyone who does not have reliable verbal speech to meet all of their communication needs.

❌ MYTH: You must master low-tech AAC before moving on to high-tech options.
✅ FACT: High-tech AAC can be introduced from day one!

Presuming competence means giving every individual access to the tools, vocabulary, and support they need to express themselves fully. 💬✨

My AAC is My Voice. 🗣️💬✨

Communication isn’t just spoken words—it’s connection, autonomy, and identity. Whether through a high-tech device, a communication book, or eye-gaze technology, AAC allows individuals to express their thoughts, jokes, feelings, and ideas on their own terms.

Voice isn't defined by how sound is produced; it's defined by the message behind it.

October is AAC Awareness Month! 🗣️💬✨

Everyone has something to say, and speech isn't the only way to say it! Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) includes all the ways people communicate outside of spoken words—from picture boards and communication books to high-tech speech-generating devices, gestures, and eye-gaze systems.

What is the goal of AAC?
To give every individual the power to express their thoughts, wants, needs, and ideas, maximizing their potential and achieving the highest quality of life possible.

How you can support AAC users:

Presume Competence: Assume AAC users understand and have valuable contributions to share.

Be Patient: Give extra wait time for individuals to compose their thoughts and messages.

Model AAC Use: Point to symbols or use AAC tools while speaking with users to help build language.

Respect Their Voice: Never speak over an AAC user or press buttons on their device without permission.

Communication is a fundamental human right. Let’s celebrate the diverse ways we connect and build a more inclusive, accessible world for everyone! 💙

"Presuming competence is not a stance that requires a teacher to prove its existence or validity in advance; rather, it is an outlook, a framework for educational engagement." — Douglas Biklen & Jamie Burke 💡

Presuming competence means starting from a place of belief. It means assuming every student has the potential to learn, communicate, and succeed—without making them "prove" it first.

🧠 When we shift our mindset from evaluating capability to providing access, we unlock true inclusion. Every student deserves an environment where their potential is assumed, supported, and celebrated from day one. 🎉

Let's keep building classrooms grounded in belief, opportunity, and agency for all learners! 🌟

Communication supports in the classroom aren't just helpful—they are transformative for both students and educators! 💡✨

When we integrate visual supports, AAC devices, and flexible communication strategies, we unlock incredible benefits for our learners:

🌟Improve understanding
🌟Encourage participation
🌟Build confidence
🌟Support inclusion

"Taking time to understand what makes students happy likely will foster trust and improve relationships between instructors and students." — Gover et al., 2022 💛

Building trust begins with understanding what truly brings joy, comfort, and engagement to our students. When we prioritize getting to know their unique interests and preferences, we create a supportive environment where meaningful learning and strong relationships can thrive.

Connection over compliance, always! ✨
