The child who won’t start the worksheet.

The child who keeps getting out of their seat.

The child who argues over a simple direction.

The child staring at a blank page while everyone else has started.

It’s easy to see a behavior and respond to the behavior.

But after more than 30 years of working with dysregulated kids, I’ve learned to ask a different question:

What’s happening underneath it?

A child may be carrying poor sleep, sensory overload, anxiety, executive functioning demands or stress into the classroom before the first bell even rings.

And when the nervous system is overloaded, the behaviors we see can be the final signal.

That’s why Regulation First® matters in classrooms too.

We don’t ignore behavior.

We understand what’s driving it so we can respond more effectively.

📖 The Dysregulated Kid helps parents, educators and professionals see the brain behind the behavior.

What happens when calm parenting meets women supporting women? 💛

On Thursday, November 5, I’m hosting an evening at Kendra Scott in SoHo, and it comes with a beautiful bonus.

🛍️ 20% of every Kendra Scott purchase made during the event goes to the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO). They help women around the world start businesses, grow their economies, shape policy, and lift up their communities.

So many of the moms I work with are building something of their own while raising kids who need a little extra. This one’s for them.

Here’s the plan:

Sometimes the Best Parenting Response Is Fewer Words

When you're parenting a dysregulated child, it's easy to think you need to talk your child out of their meltdown.

But here's what I want you to understand about emotional dysregulation in children:

An overwhelmed nervous system doesn't need more information to process.

During a meltdown, your child may already be struggling to manage their emotions, sensory input, and stress response.

And every additional question or demand can make the moment feel even more overwhelming.

It might look like:
✔️ Sitting quietly beside your child.
✔️ Softening your facial expression.
✔️ Lowering your voice.
✔️ Giving them space without withdrawing support.
✔️ Offering a hug if that's something they find comforting.

That's where co-regulation techniques become so important.

How to Tell When a Child Has Calmed Down After a Meltdown

This is something parents often miss about emotional dysregulation in children.

The behavior may have stopped, but the nervous system may still be recovering.

During meltdowns in children, the brain and body can become highly activated.

And even after the visible reaction ends, your child may still have difficulty accessing the thinking, flexibility, and problem-solving skills needed for a productive conversation.

That's why nervous system regulation in children isn't measured by the clock.

It's about noticing signs that your child has enough capacity to engage again.

You finally figured out what's underneath your child's meltdowns.

Then they walk into school, and it starts all over again.

Same overwhelm. Same "defiance." Same phone call at 2pm.

It's not that teachers don't care.

It's that every adult in the building is responding differently.

And for neurodivergent kids, that inconsistency is exhausting.

What changes it? A shared language.

When every adult understands the nervous system, kids stop getting punished for struggling.

That's why I created Build & Lead CALMS: a simple way for schools, libraries, and programs to bring The Dysregulated Kid and CALMS to their whole team.

All it takes is one parent to start the conversation.

Delayed Correction Isn't Permissive Parenting

It's strategic parenting.
When you're parenting a dysregulated child, it's easy to believe you need to address every behavior immediately.

But during emotional dysregulation in children, the nervous system is focused on managing stress.

And when your child is highly activated, listening, reflecting, and problem-solving can become much harder.

✔️ Acknowledge the feeling.
✔️ Hold the boundary.
✔️ Teach one better way to respond.
✔️ Give your child an opportunity to practice.

That's how we support self-regulation skills for children without overwhelming them with more information than they can use.

You've done the work at home.

You've learned to look underneath the behavior.

But then your child walks into school, and nobody there speaks the same language.

For neurodivergent kids especially, that gap can mean being misunderstood all day long.

You don't have to change the whole system. You just have to start the conversation.

Hand a copy to a teacher. Ask your library to carry it. Bring it to your PTA.

When the adults in your child's life are on the same page, everything gets calmer.

Are you in the Washington, D.C. area?

I’d love to meet you at the 2026 ILADS Annual Scientific Conference in Herndon, Virginia.

From October 22–25, professionals working with complex and chronic conditions will come together around this year’s theme:

“Reframing Complex Disease: Pathways to Treatment.”

Complex illness requires us to look beyond the obvious.

Symptoms don’t always fit neatly into one box.

And the families navigating them often spend far too long searching for answers.

Over my 30+ years as a child psychologist, my work has reinforced the importance of looking at the whole picture when a child is struggling.

That includes getting curious about what may be happening beneath the behaviors and symptoms we see.

If you’re attending ILADS, come find me!

📍 Hyatt Regency Dulles, Herndon, Virginia

📅 October 22–25, 2026

🤝 Come say hello and connect during the conference.

📚 I’ll also be signing copies of The Dysregulated Kid.

I’m looking forward to meeting clinicians and professionals asking deeper questions about complex health and supporting the children and families affected by it.

If you’re in the D.C. or Northern Virginia area, I hope to see you there!

When Should You Teach a Child After a Meltdown?

Here's the question I want you to ask yourself:
"Is my child ready to learn, or am I just ready to lecture?"

Because those are two very different things.

When you're parenting a dysregulated child, it's easy to feel like you have to correct every behavior immediately.

When your child's nervous system is highly activated, they may have a harder time:
✔️ Listening to what you're saying.
✔️ Thinking clearly.
✔️ Understanding consequences.
✔️ Problem-solving.
✔️ Accessing the coping skills they already know.

And here's something else parents often forget.
Your nervous system may be overwhelmed too.

That's why parent emotional regulation matters just as much as helping your child regulate.

When you're frustrated, angry, or feeling disrespected, it's easy to launch into a lecture because you want to regain control of the moment.

💜 The goal isn't to win the moment. It's to help your child learn from it.

How to Use "Regulate. Connect. Correct" With Dysregulated Kids

Your child finally stops screaming.

And your brain immediately goes:
"Okay, NOW we're going to talk about what happened."

But wait.

Just because the behavior stopped doesn't mean their nervous system has fully recovered.

This is one of the biggest things parents miss about emotional dysregulation in children.

And when you're parenting a dysregulated child, it's easy to rush into correction because you want to address the behavior while it's fresh.
