You can be good at what you do and still wonder whether the life you’re building feels like your own.

In medicine, there’s always a clear next step: the next exam, the next rotation, the next credential. Most demanding careers work the same way. The habit becomes moving forward, and stopping to ask what you actually want can feel unfamiliar, even uncomfortable.

After working this hard to get here, wanting something to change can also bring guilt. Shouldn’t I just be grateful?

You can appreciate what you’ve accomplished and still want a different pace. You can care deeply about your work and want more energy for the people you love. Success can include more than what you keep achieving.

In coaching, we look at the expectations you’re carrying, clarify your priorities, and turn that into choices you can follow through on.

If you’re ready to explore what’s next, DM me “NEXT.” Tell me a little about where you are, and we’ll see whether coaching together is a good fit.

In lab research at the University of Colorado, rats went through the exact same stress, with one difference: some of them could do something about it. In the ones with control, the PREFRONTAL CORTEX picked up on it and signaled the brain’s alarm system to settle. The lead researcher, Steven Maier, summed it up: control was the active ingredient.

That’s part of why “I’ll be happy when…” weighs so much. The promotion, the market and the client’s decision all sit outside personal control. A week built around those outcomes leaves very little to act on.

The sort doesn’t mean caring less about the “not mine” column. It means not spending Sunday night on it.

For driven professionals, the “my next step” column is usually longer than it looks at first.

One word: what’s the biggest “not my decision” on this week’s list?

You can spend an entire weekend away from work and still return feeling depleted.

Because recovery isn't simply the absence of work.

Research in occupational psychology identifies four experiences associated with recovery: psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery, and control.

Each plays a different role in how we disengage from work demands and restore our sense of well-being.

Sometimes what you're missing isn't another day off.

It's a different way of spending the time you already have.

Which of the four is hardest for you to make room for?

01 — Detachment
02 — Relaxation
03 — Mastery
04 — Control
